Kosovo's International Hurdles Debated
| 13 March 2008 |The meeting, which focused on the challenges Kosovo faces in joining international organisations, was organised by the Pristina-based college “Universum”.
Law Professor Zejnullah Gruda noted that Russia is likely to oppose Kosovo membership of some organisations, including the UN.
Former army general, Ramadan Qehaja, pointed out that the issue of NATO membership for Kosovo depends on the new state's capacity to meet the Alliance's basic membership criteria. "Kosovo must establish a democratic political system that would favour all its citizens and solve any dispute with neighbouring countries,” he said.
Panellists discussed a broad range of challenges in the international arena facing Kosovo since its declaration of independence on February 17. There was a consensus that gaining membership of the OSCE as well as the UN might be difficult due to Russian opposition.

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
