Kosovo Serb In War Crimes Arrest

| 13 March 2008 |

Pristina _ A Kosovo Serb suspected of war crimes was arrested Wednesday, local police say.

“M. Jovanovic has been arrested under suspicion of being involved in a crime during the war in 1999,” a press release by the Kosovo Police Service says.

It adds that “the allegations against the suspect are related to a case in the Pec/Peja region,” which is in western Kosovo.

According to the police statement, the arrest was made based on a warrant signed by an international judge.

The suspect has been identified by members of the victims’ family, which “is the main witness in the case”.

The case "is being conducted by the international prosecutor in Kosovo."

Serb forces were involved in the brutal supression of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority during the 1990s, and culminated in war between 1998-1999, until Serb forces withdrew following NATO airstrikes on the country.

Both ethnic Serbs and Albanians are accused of atrocities during the conflict but the process of bringing them to justice has been slow.
