Croatia To Recognise Kosovo 'Next Week'
| 12 March 2008 |A source within Croatian government, who did not want to be identified, told Balkan Insight that “the government in Zagreb plans to formally recognise the Republic of Kosovo by next week.”
Earlier, media had reported that March 13 is the date when the Croatian government will take such a decision.
Croatia seeks to act in line with most other European Union member states regarding Kosovo’s independence. Croatia is not an EU member but with its candidate status aspires to join the bloc soon.
Earlier this week, the EU's Foreign Policy chief, Javier Solana said “other countries in the (Balkans) region should follow the EU example,” adding that “independence is important for stability in the region.”
With Slovenia being the first former Yugoslav state to recognise Kosovo, Croatia is set to follow suit.

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
