Belgrade _ Belex 15, the index of most liquid shares at the Belgrade Stock Exchange dropped 7.4 % Wednesday, a total of 15 % this week, amid political turmoil ahead of May 11 general elections.

According to brokers, the drop could be related to absence of small local investors and the global credit crunch.

“The drop is related to the mistrust of portfolio investors in Serbia’s stability,” Nenad Gujanicic of the Sinteza Invest Group said in remarks carried by Belgrade's B92 Television.

Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's government collapsed earlier this week amid rift between pro-Western minister loyal to Tadic and his conservatives over a resolution that stipulated that Serbia would abandon its bid to join the European Union unless Brussels recognises Kosovo as lying firmly within Serbian borders.

Early parliamentary elections that set to be scheduled for May 11will pit pro-European parties against nationalists and conservatives, and will determine Serbia's position in the years to come, analysts say.
