Bulgaria Suffers 'Excessive' Air Pollution
Sofia | 01 March 2010 |
Sofia and Plovdiv, the country’s two largest cities, experience the worst air pollution, according to the Bulgarian Environmental Ministry’s data. Also, pollution in the town of Pernik is twice the permitted level.
Novinite reports that the director of the ministry’s Air Protection Directorate, Ivan Anguelov, said Monday that the principal sources of pollution in the country are energy, industry, household consumption, and especially transport.
He added that the pollution is persistent throughout the year and is not confined to particular days or locally prevailing weather conditions.
Anguelov said that in general, municipal authorities have underestimated the air pollution problem.
He warned that there was a possibility that Bulgaria could be sanctioned by the European Union due to the excessive pollution, while adding that no formal warnings had yet been received by the Environment Ministry.
