All of newly named commissioners went through hearings in the European Parliament. Bulgaria's initial commissioner-designate, Rumiana Jeleva, withdrew her candidacy after MEPs raised questions about her competency for the position. Georgieva was then nominated to the post and was well received by the parliament during her confirmation hearing.
Georgieva will handle the international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response portfolio in the new Commission.
Dacian Ciolos, the new commissioner from Romania, will hold the agriculture and rural development portfolio. Ciolos most recently served in Romania as the head of the Presidential Commission on Agricultural Development Public Policy of Romania. He was previously the agriculture and rural development minister.
The new Commission will serve from 2009 until 2014 and will be led by the current commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso.
