Popular Serbian/Montenegrin actor Zarko Lausevic will appear before a New York court which will decide whether to allow him to stay in the United States and under which conditions.

Lausevic, who was previously wanted by Interpol, was arrested in July in the US over questions concerning his immigration status.

“The court made a decision to abolish the custody [order] for Mr Lausevic, which will take effect in the next 24 hours,” the newspaper quoted the actor’s lawyer, Timothy Griffin, as saying. He added that Lausevic may well receive permission to stay in the US, where his family lives.

As of September, the actor is a free man after a New York court decided not to charge him in relation to his immigration status.

Lausevic, who is well known for his roles in popular Serbian films, was sentenced in Montenegro to five years in prison for a double murder committed in self-defence in 1994. Following a retrial in 1998, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Montenegro - then united with Serbia - sentenced him to 13 years in prison.

After serving his sentence, he emigrated to the US where he worked as a construction labourer, and was in poor health, according to unconfirmed reports.

He was removed from the Interpol wanted list after the president of the Third Municipal Court in Belgrade, Nada Mihajlovic, accepted a request from Serbian Chief Prosecutor Slobodan Radovanovic to postpone his sentence.

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
