Sarajevo is not your city, Mr Karadzic, but mine

02 March 2010 | By Nidzara Ahmetasevic

Radovan Karadzic Radovan Karadzic, Sarajevo is not your city, and you have no right to say that it is, just as you do not have the right to say in public, even if it’s in court, that someone has dug up bones around Bosnia and brought them to Srebrenica to make a fake graveyard. This is insulting.

Bulgaria Covered in Snow

| 08 February 2010 |

Bulgaria emerged completely snowbound on Monday, as excessive snowfall is reported across the country, Bulgarian media reported.

Traffic in Sofia is impeded in most areas, with heavy congestion observed at several main boulevards and on the Sofia Ring Road, the Sofia Echo reported.

In the northeast of the country, the riverside city of Rousse was hit severely. Vehicles were stranded in the snow and needed to be pulled out. Stranded buses, lorries and cars were freed by rescue crews and there were no reported casualties.

The road section Rousse-Razgrad was closed to traffic, as about 45cm of fresh snow are reported to have accumulated overnight.

The Hemus and Trakiya motorways are reported as "normal under winter conditions" but motorists must be aware that obscured visibility, snow, icy patches and other hazards all represent a potential danger.

The Troyan-Kurnare-Elena mountain pass is shut to all traffic, according to reports, with traffic being diverted through Vratnik pass.

Sofia's airport is reportedly operating without any major disruptions, according to their website, although one flight from Cyprus, scheduled to land at 10.35am on Monday, was cancelled altogether.

Conditions in the mountains are rough for skiing and tourism. Visibility is poor, and the new layer of snow has created "ideal" conditions for avalanches, the Mountain Rescue Service (PSS) said.

Snowfall will continue across most of Bulgaria throughout the day, the Bulgarian Meteorological Service advised.

Other countries in the Balkans have been reporting similarly snowy conditions. Schools were closed due to the weather in parts of Romania on Monday, while icy roads were responsible for at least one traffic accident in Serbia on Sunday.
