A former president of the parliamentary commission for conflicts of interest and a university professor, Desa Mlikotin-Tomic, and 18 other professors, students and mediators, were convicted today of ‘trading’ exam results at the Zagreb Faculty of Economics in the so-called “Index 3” case.

Javno reported that the verdict handed down by the district court indicated that the defendants were guilty of abuse of power and authority for receiving and giving bribes and illegal mediation. Two of the defendants, Professor Nina Liszt and student Daniel Malaric, were acquitted on all charges.

Mlikotin-Tomic was convicted of abuse of position and authority as well as bribery. She was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment and a three-year teaching ban; other defendants were given sentences ranging from probation to teaching bans and jail terms.

Croatia must increase its fight against corruption in all sectors as part of its bid to join the European Union. Today’s verdict can be appealed to Croatia’s supreme court.

I might start to feel more convinced about Croatia's crusade against corruption when the Minister for Environmental Protection, Spatial Planning and Construction is removed from her position in spite of holding shares in IGH; when any of the interminable investigations into Zagreb mayor Bandic finally concludes, or when the Law on Golf is overturned. Until then.... nula bodova.

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen.
