Albania’s health authorities began administering vaccinations against the H1N1 virus on Tuesday after the first batch of vaccines arrived in the country.

On Tuesday only hospitals were carrying out vaccinations; clinics around the country will begin administering the vaccine on Wednesday. The first shipment of 10,000 doses will be mainly used to vaccinate the so-called at-risk groups of the population.

Statistics published by the health authorities show that Albania has registered more than 334 cases of H1N1 since the start of the epidemic.

So far the country has confirmed six fatalities related to the swine flu and authorities warn that the virus remains a serious health risk, particularly for patients with existing chronic health problems.

In a statement the Ministry of Health advised all persons in high-risk groups to exercise caution and to contact health clinics immediately in case of influenza symptoms.
