Romanian Cabinet Named by PM Designate
Bucharest | 21 December 2009 |
The new cabinet is based on a coalition between the center-right Democratic Party, PLD, and party of ethnic Hungarians in Romania, UDMR, with support from independent members of the parliament.
The key finance ministry portfolio has been handed to former minister Sebastian Vladescu, a technocrat and member of a centrist coalition government in 2005-2007. Boc also retained another five ministers for his team, including Economy Minister Adriean Videanu and Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu.
UDMR will take three ministries - health, culture and environment - in the future government, in addition to the position of deputy prime minister.
Parliament is expected to vote on the cabinet on Wednesday with approval all but guaranteed as Boc's coalition has five votes more than the 236-seat majority needed in both houses.
The new government faces one of the biggest challenges in the country's post-communist history as designate Prime Minister Emil Boc will be tasked with bringing Romania out of its deep recession and speeding up preparations for Euro membership.
On December 17, Romania’s newly elected president Traian Basescu nominated current acting Prime Minister Emil Boc to head a new government, after he lost a vote of no confidence in parliament in October.
