The Albanian Ministry of Defense signed on Friday a 78.6 million euro deal for the acquisition of five AS 532 AL Cougar helicopters from France-based Eurocopter.

The transport helicopters are expected to be delivered to the Albanian military by 2013 and represent the largest arms purchase made by the country in the last decade.

Albania, which together with Croatia joined NATO in February, has started to update its military arsenal in order to meet  the alliance's standards.

In February 2008, Albania added four new patrol ships to its navy fleet after reaching a 31 million euro deal with the Netherlands.

According to the agreement, 11 million euro for the new ships will come in the form of a government grant from the Netherlands, while the rest will be supported by the state budget over a period of four years.
