Bulgaria May Receive Guantanamo Inmates

Speaking to media after a joint meeting of the parliamentary commissions on foreign policy and interior security, Tsvetanov said a final decision will be make by an intergovernmental working group, and underscored his country’s strong strategic partnership with the US.
He said the prisoners would be treated as refugees.
The transfer of prisoners to other countries from the Gauntanamo Bay prison is part of US President Barack Obama’s effort to close down the controversial camp.
Daniel Fried, Special Envoy for Guantanamo Closure of Obama, sent a letter earlier this month to Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, asking Bulgaria to accept three Guantanamo prisoners, media report.
According to media, Bulgaria's former government was previously asked to take Guantanamo inmates but turned down the request.




The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
