Croatia Ambassador Charged for Alcohol Smuggling
Zagreb | 15 December 2009 |
The Croatian Anti-corruption Agency, USKOK, has pressed charges against the former Croatian Ambassador to Libya Jovan Vejnovic for having used his position to smuggle alcohol into the country.
Vejnovic imported alcohol into Libya, where its sale and consumption are officially banned, Croatia Times reports.
USKOK has charged Vejnovic, 66, with having smuggled 5,000 litres of alcohol worth 46,550 US dollars from 2006 to the end of 2008. He was allegedly supplying INA petroleum company workers with the alcohol.
Vejnovic was recalled to Croatia at the beginning of the year. At that time, he rejected all charges.
USKOK has also pressed charges against Vejnovic's accomplice in the smuggling, an INA employee.
