Macedonia PM: No Room for EU Skepticism

There is no room for EU skepticism, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said Friday afternoon after his meeting with the EU ambassador to the country, Erwan Fouere and the other leaders of the main political parties.

“We are aware that Greece is our problem,” Gruevski told media after the joint lunch meeting at Fouere’s residence in Skopje, adding that the country will keep up its efforts to resolve the long running name spat with Athens.

The party leaders discussed this week’s EU Council decision in which foreign ministers postponed reaching decision on on whether to give Skopje a start date for EU accession talks following Greek objections.

Fouere met political leaders and asked for their opinions on how the country can solve the long running dispute with Greece in the next six months, local A1 TV reported.

Other party leaders that attended the meeting said the talks were constructive, the MIA news agency said.

“We would like to move our country towards the EU and NATO, and we will not be brought down by this decision, Gruevski noted.

Other than Gruevski who is also the head of the main ruling centre right VMRO-DPMNE party, the meeting was attended by Branko Crvenkovski the head of the main opposition party, the Social-Democrats, SDSM.

The head of the junior ruling party, the Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, Ali Ahmeti, as well as the leaders of the opposition New Democracy, News Social Democrats and the Liberal Democrats, Imer Selmani, Tito Petkovski and Jovan Manasijevski were also there.

Only the opposition Democratic Party of Albanians, DPA leader Menduh Taci did not show up.

The meeting comes after a series of statements by the prime minister and president were interpreted by the public a sparking EU skepticism among the public.

On Wednesday and Thursday protests were staged in front of the EU office in Skopje by several student associations. However, few students showed up at the rally. Instead, media reported organised groups of workers and ruling party supporters from other parts of Macedonia who were dominant at the protests.

VMRO DPMNE denied any relation to the events.

History is your problem
2009-12-11 18:11:12
Historical documentation proves that 90% of the area occupied by FYROM never belonged to any Macedonia at any period in time. In fact, in antiquity this area was part of ancient Greek Paionia, as it was situated north of Philip's and Alexander's Macedonia. Heraclea Lyncestis was at the northern tip of Philip's Macedonia which is what we know today as Monastiri, or Bitola. That's as far north as Macedonia went. The fact that Tito baptized this area (FYROM) as Macedonia doesn't make it so. Neither does it make it's inhabitants Macedonians. If they got brain-washed over the last sixty or so years into thinking that they are ethnic Macedonians, well, that's their problem, and not Philip's, Alexander's nor any other Greek's. We will not give into Skopje's irrational demands. Time is on Greece's side. Skopje's pseudo-nationalist policies contradict the state's diverse, multi-ethnic cultural structure. It is also this same state-fostered pseudo-nationalism conflicting with the European Union’s own political culture adversely affecting FYROM’s EU aspirations. The EU will not admit FYROM only to avoid inter-ethnic conflict within that state. The Albanians in FYROM do not identify as ethnic Macedonians. Neither do the Bulgarians, the Turks nor the Greeks(Vlachs, Sarakatsans) in FYROM. Both Thaci and Ahmeti have had enough of Gruevski's political circus. The clock is ticking. There will not be a second Ohrid.

Greece is your problem? Really? Most people (even politicians) take some responsibility for not being able to get the job done. No wonder Macedonia is not in the EU or NATO. If this isn't resolved in 6 months (forget the other 18 years!) we Albanians should be given the right of self-determination. This government does not speak for us, as they pretend only Macedonians exist in their borders.

No Grucho, your problem is the high unemployement rate amongst the Albanians...

...And you'd better bring investments from Turkey or wherever else you think you can to deal with it. Don't worry about Tacis' blubbering though. If I were you I would fear the day your own flag starts bursting upon you, as it happened at 2001... ...But that won't happen for at least one more year...

Rudy I agree with you.The Spanish won't even touch the name issue in the next six months.Gruevski is deluding himself if he thinks the EU will go against the Greeks to satisfy his pseudo-nationalistic aspirations. The Albanians must do what they have to do for their future.

Dear Mr.Gialtouridis,do you realy serious on your comments? No wonder you Greeks still live in mythical "Megali Idea"Are you trying to fool the public by fabrication? If we talk about ancient time you loose my friend.Ancient Hellens are none existant, furtheremore, most of the City States like Athens was populated by Albanians, same goes for Peloponesus. The Hellens came from Ethiopia and Asia, they setled south of Thesaley, never north.By your claim, the Alexanders Empire was Greek?Alexander went to Asia with over 35000 Macedonians and 5000 Hellens who declaired alligiance to Alexander. What happened in Persia?50000 Hellens fought againts Alexanders army allighned with the Persian King Darious.Do you clasify that as a Greek Empire that they fought againts? You talk about Tito, why?I will prove to you you are wrong on TITO your constant claims. Here is what professor Skoulariki said"The Greek arguments are not convincing because it is a fundamental right of all people to freely choose their name.We insist that our neighbor has no right to use the name Macedonia, ignoring the fact that durring the 19th and 20th century there was a wider rehion called Macedonia".What realy means,Macedonia pre-existed Greece in acient times and in todays terms. Please, stop with your lies as the world dont buy it.Of course, the best history fabricators are the Greeks, congratulations! One more thing, when Macedonia existed and it does,Tito or Titos grandfather was not born,do you understand your idea of Titos creating Macedonia is a political ploy by the Greeks? Greece has run-out of lies, the world knows the history not just the Greek version based on lies. As an interest for the wider audience, the Unzi people of Pakistan and the Macedonians in the Republic,Greek occupied Macedonia still today use similar words as durring the Alexanders time, you cant find one word that matches a Greek word. How that grabs you? If you want prove of this just let me know,I will provide you with the exact words.

Identity theft in the EU is a crime. Wanting to revise history, and to present people and land that have no relation to Macedonia with macedonia is insane. End of discussion=end of EU application. The EU did not apply to join phony macedonia.

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
