Six People Die in Albania Car Accident
Tirana | 01 December 2009 |
Six people lost their lives in the Fushe Kruja-Lac highway on Monday evening after a car collided with an ambulance.
The accident killed the driver of the ambulance and five youngsters in the Mercedes, with which it collided, local media reported.
The deadly crash is the worst accident in Albania's highway this year. The Fushe Kruja-Lac highway, which connects the Albanian capital Tirana, with northern Albania, is often the scene of deadly traffic accidents, dubbed by drivers the 'highway of death.'
According to a World Bank study 384 fatal car accidents were recorded in Albania in 2007, or 13,9 deaths in car accidents per 100,000 people, slightly higher than the EU average.
However, fatal accidents have seen a double-digit increase in recent years, which remains a matter of concern for the authorities and the general public.

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
