Albania Police Bust 23 Kilos of Heroin
Tirana | 23 November 2009 |
Albanian police sequestered 23.5 kilograms of heroin and arrested a suspect after an anonymous tip in the town of Mamurras.
The drugs were found in the apartment of 64-yea-old man, Hamit Doci. Druing the sweep of Doci's apartment, who has been charged with drug trafficking related to the bust, police also sequestered a Berata type pistol.
The Balkans remains a preferred trafficking route for Afghan heroin, smuggled to Western Europe. Organised crime gangs in Albania have long cooperated with the Turkish Mafia and the Italian Sacra Corona Unita to smuggle heroin across the Otranto channel, in the Adriatic Sea to Italy.
Another preferred route into the EU border free zone has been through border crossings with Greece in Southern Albania.

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
