Sarajevo is not your city, Mr Karadzic, but mine

02 March 2010 | By Nidzara Ahmetasevic

Radovan Karadzic Radovan Karadzic, Sarajevo is not your city, and you have no right to say that it is, just as you do not have the right to say in public, even if it’s in court, that someone has dug up bones around Bosnia and brought them to Srebrenica to make a fake graveyard. This is insulting.

A string of protest rallies will be staged in Macedonia and abroad in a bid to have the talks with Greece suspended, the so-called resistance movement against changing the state name of Macedonia said.

The movement acts with support of several NGO’s and civic associations including the World Macedonian Congress, and ex-pat communities such as the United Macedonians in Canada and Macedonian communities in the United States, Australia and Europe.

Protests will be staged on 20 November and 27 November in front of the EU Mission in Skopje.
A protest march will also be organised on 2 December in front of the government and parliament buildings, the organisers said.

“The series of protest rallies… are expected to send a strong message for immediate and unconditional termination of negotiations with Athens regarding the state name of Macedonia” the head of the World Macedonian Congress, Todor Petrov told a news conference on Thursday.

The movement plans to stage protests in several cities across the world on 6 December, just one day before the EU Council’s meeting where member states will decide whether to give Skopje a date to start EU accession negotiations.

Last year Athens blocked Skopje’s NATO accession over the 18 years-long spat. Athens insists that Skopje’s official name, the Republic of Macedonia, implies territorial claims towards its own northern province - also called Macedonia.

Local media speculate that some version of the compound name Northern Macedonia to clearly distinct the state from the Greek province is still on the table at the UN sponsored “name” talks between the two countries.

In 1993 due to Greece’s pressure Macedonia agreed to enter the UN under the provisional reference "Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", FYROM, pending a resolution of the long-running dispute.

Since then some 120 countries worldwide, including China, the United States of America and Russia have
recognised country’s constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia.

Isolation

If they don't change their name, then they face isolation.Their country will eventually dissolve. The Albanians in their country will take over by joining the E.U. I then see civil war breaking out.

Protests

Go ahead and protest. Stop negotiations. The diaspora does not care about the people back home or what happens, they already enjoying the benefits of the countries they have adopted. By stopping negotiations you will add more oil to the fire and you know what will eventually happen to FRYOM.

Protests Against Name
2009-11-21 13:46:02
This sort of sums up just how stupid the Macs are. The Albanian population in Macedonia will be over 51% of the country within 15 years - they will then be in the position to change the name to whatever they like - so Macedonians understand that by voting against the name change now you will be just creating another 15 or so years of misery for yourselves which will mean nothing! Wake up and vote for your future not the past!

Shame on them
2009-11-21 16:42:47
Yeah, let them protest! With their big cars and rich houses. and let the people in scopjie to rot... this pathetic diaspora don't care about how this is going to affect those people at the end of the day! they have nothing to lose, so they can be as nationalistic as ever! Shame!

No EU
2009-11-21 18:46:53
So the termination of name negotiations is the next card to be played by the nationalists who are being pressured to make compromises by the UN, the US, and by the EU. I have 3 questions? What happens if the name negotiations are cancelled? No solution to the problem, and a lot of players (EU, US, UN) will not be happy and will end up punishing FYRoM for its stance, and their waste of time. Who wins in this situation? Well, not the citizens in FYRoM who see a better future falling away. However, the Nationalists and the politicians will have more support for "protecting" the country from "evil" - and more money filtering to/and from the diaspora communities that only care about their jobs in their lobbies and their prestige for having contact with the powers in Skopje, and their expensive dinners with congressmen. What does the future hold? Upset Albanian population, possible federalization of the country, and possible isolation by the EU and its neighbours. The US already supports the Albanian cause - see Albania, Kossovo, and the treatment of those who oppose them. Good luck, and best wishes for a prosperous and happy future.
