Serbian special forces arrested on Tuesday a 13-member criminal group, suspected kidnappers, extortionists and people smugglers, who are also suspected of involvement in arms and drugs trafficking.

In an interview with the Tanjug news agency, the head of the Serbian police Milorad Veljovic confirmed the arrests, adding that the suspects were Belgrade and Pancevo residents.

"These arrests are yet another confirmation of the strong determination of the competent state authorities not to waiver in the fight against corruption and organised crime," the agency quoted Veljovic as saying.

He specified that the operation was carried out by Special Anti-Terrorist Unit of Serbian police.

A larger quantity of weapons such as four guns, a hunting rifle, a "Thompson", armor, and a certain amount of drugs were seized during the arrests, Blic daily reports.

Media speculate that leader of the crime group has been identified as Dragan Zivkovic.
