Bucharest | 18 November 2009 |Romania is the European Union’s most corrupt country, anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International said on Tuesday as it unveiled its 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index today. The organisation said policy decisions since the start of negotiations for EU accession had undermined the country’s political institutions and contributed to the perception that the risk of corruption in the country had increased.
CAPITAL
The Labour Inspectorate had announced it had doubled maximum fines for firms taking on workers illegally to 932 euros. It said the fines, effective as of 16 November, would be handed to employers for each person
found working illegally.
FINANCIARUL
Romania’s largest oil company Petrom has been named as one of the world’s top global energy firms. The firm, owned by Austrian OMV AG, came in at 169 in the Platts 2009 global energy companies ranking - the only Romanian company in the list.




The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
