The Swedish Presidency of the European Union has welcomed the “orderly conduct” of the municipal elections of 15 November 2009 in Kosovo.

“The broad participation from different ethnic groups is an expression of voters’ commitment to the further consolidation of a democratic and multi-ethnic society in Kosovo in accordance with European values and standards”, the presidency said in an issued statement.

In addition, the statement stressed the hope that the second round of elections on December 13 will be conducted in an orderly manner.

“The Presidency wishes to point out the great significance of correct and full completion of the remaining election process. In this process, the Election Complaints and Appeal Commission plays a key role and must be allotted all the necessary support and resources”, statement says.

Various European officials have said that last Sunday was a “good day” for the EU, not only because of orderly conduct of elections but also because of the participation of Kosovo Serbs.

Their participation was the highest so far in post-war Kosovo. European Institutions have always called for the participation of Kosovo Serbs in elections but the appeal had been previously unsuccessful.
