A bid by Lucian Croitoru to become Romania's next prime minister failed, after opposition parties voted against his proposed cabinet, extending the country's political deadlock, and putting in jeopardy the country's International Monetary Fund, IMF, loan.

The Parliament rejected Croitoru's proposed cabinet line-up with 250 votes in favour, and 189 against. He needed 236 votes to be approved.

Croitoru, who is a respected economist at the central bank, was nominated in October by centrist President Traian Basescu, following the collapse of former Prime Minister Emil Boc's minority centre-right government on 12 October.

But Croitoru failed to secure the backing of the legislature as opposition parties, which hold around 65 per cent of parliamentary seats, proposed an alternative nominee.

Mr. Croitoru acknowledged defeat. "I chose the best government I could. My mission has ended," he said.

Basescu said late on Wednesday he wants to designate another prime minister as soon as possible and will set party consultation schedule on Thursday. Opposition parties say they want Klaus Johannis, the mayor of the city of Sibiu, as prime minister.

But it is most unlikely a stable cabinet can be formed before the first round of presidential elections on 22 November.

The current political crisis comes in as Romania implements an economic package designed to cut back government spending and reign in the deficit. Implementation of the package is necessary in order for Romania to receive the next tranches of an IMF loan. The loan is part of a multilateral package which will total up to 20 billion euros.

Croitoru was part of the team that negotiated the IMF loan.
