The presidency of the Macedonian Academy of Science and Arts, MANU, decided on Wednesday to withdraw its controversial Macedonian encyclopaedia.

The editors of the encyclopaedia were ordered to revise and correct the passages in the book that refer to Macedonian-Albanian relations, Albanians in Macedonia, the former head of the 2001 ethnic Albanian insurgency, Ali Ahmeti, and the insurgent forces.

They are to revise the book as soon as possible with the assistance of ethnic Albanian members of the MANU, who had previously distanced themselves from the publication.

The MANU presidency says that it will stage an extraordinary session with the editors, who are led by academic Blaze Ristovski, to determine responsibility for the contentious sections of the tome.

The decision came as ethnic Albanian students from South Eastern European University gathered in the Macedonian town of Tetovo to express their disgust with the encyclopaedia.

Parading in central Tetovo, the protestors carried slogans saying: “Stop the Encyclopaedia” and “Alexander [the Great] is Albanian”.

References in the encyclopaedia to to ethnic Albanians as “settlers” who came to the country in the 16th century and to Albanians as “Shiptari” -  a term with derogatory connotations - have caused significant offense.

“The Macedonian encyclopaedia released by the academy contains many pseudo-scientific facts and other forgeries and insults against [...] Albanians” Valon Kurtishi from an NGO that helped organise today's protest, Ilirikum Libertas, told the A1 TV station.

The row has soured relations in the government with the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration demanding that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski condemn the book, which he promoted only two weeks ago.

...it was about time. On a lighter note: This "Parading in central Tetovo, the protestors carried slogans saying: “Stop the Encyclopaedia” and “Alexander [the Great] is Albanian”." is just excellent :D. I suggest Macedonians and Albanians teaming up. Alexander should be the hero of both Macedonians and Albanians. Am curious on the Greeks' reactions... ^_^

Shuaxx said: "Alexander should be the hero of both Macedonians and Albanians. Am curious on the Greeks' reactions" ----------------------------------- Alexander the Great is the hero of Macedonians. Thats confirmed. The problem is... you have nothing to do with Macedonians since 50 years ago you were Bulgarians according your own sources...

Alexanders mother was Albanian and even Wikipedia says so which means that he was half Albanian but thats not the case. Macedonians has always tried to snub Albanians who live there, that went so far that now Macedonians wants to change the history too! but they forgot that history is written by facts that has happen Have you ever read the constitution of Macedonia ?? it is written in that way just to prevent and snub all the Albanians from any political and social activity. finally: Dont forget that this incident was provoked from Macedonians

Past vs Present

I believe Albanians have shown a great example of cooperation with Macedonians despite the controversy of the whole situation! How else would you interpret the statements about Alexander the Great? First Macedonians lost their mind by trying to grab this great guy in the PAST instead of doing something useful NOW. And now Albanians. The same, by the way goes to Greeks as well. Hey, why don't you try to live TODAY and to prove the world that you are smart nations instead of proving that you used to be smart thousands years ago? Look at the streets of Skopje, does it look like it's a country somehow related to "the Great"?!!!

Momma is what???

Alexanders mother Albanian? LMAO. Wasnt her name Olympias? Since when is that Albanian. I have nothing against Albanians, but those that have been hanging out with FYROMians have began to lose their mind. Learn history from scholarly and trusted sources, not like this encyclopedia. This just reaffirms the practice by Skopjans of toying and rewriting history for propagandist reasons.

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
