In an emergency session on Wednesday the editorial committee of Macedonia's Academy of Sciences and Arts's, MANU, that prepared the country's first encyclopaedia decided to revise the disputed parts of the book that refer to the history and present life of the large Albanian community living in Macedonia.

After receiving heavy flak from the country’s Albanians, as well as objections from neighboring Kosovo and Albania who all disputed the book's historical analysis and accused MANU of stirring ethnic intolerance, the academy head Georgi Stardelov announced that while partly rewritten, the edition as a whole will not be withdrawn.

The book promoted last week as one of the highest academic achievements of the country in the presence of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, was quick to cause political outrage that quickly spilled over into the neighbouring countries.

On Monday, Albanian NGOs and political parties in the country demanded that MANU should  immediately withdraw its newly published Macedonian Encyclopaedia and apologise to Albanians for referring to them as “settlers” in the book.

The demonstrators said it is not true that Albanians were settlers who arrived in western Macedonia in the 16th century.

The protesters also objected to the way that the leader of the country's 2001 ethnic Albanian insurgency, Ali Ahmeti, is described as a “war crimes suspect”. Ahmeti now leads the junior coalition partner in the government, the Democratic Union for Integration, DUI.

In the meantime the US and UK embassies also reacted. They urged MANU to change the part in which the book says theat their military personel took part in training of the Albanian insurgents in 2001.

A step in the right direction

This is a step in the right direction, however it remains to be seen what the actual outcome will be. The Macedonian people should by now comprehend that the Albanian people hold no ill will towards them. The Albanian people do not question your identity or your church and as long as we can respect each others dignity and heritage then both nations will be able to live in peace and equality.

"Macedonian" encyclopaedia ? what a joke

FRYOM
2009-09-23 19:21:27
Why is this not a suprise. FRYOM leadership likes to invent history and are becoming experts at identity theft. They will try and get away with whatever they can so that they can justify their ethnic identity at the expense at others. Now its the Albanians. Who's next Bulgaria?

truth ?
2009-09-23 22:17:04
Lets do it again, lets forget about whats right and true and soon Kosovo will never ever had belong to Serbia, it will always been independent Albanian country and US had nothing to do with that?!?!?!?

The only settlers to this region so-called Macedonia are the "Slavs" and not the Albanians.Weather they like it or not history records show everything.Soon this will solve everything when FYROM will disappears from the map.

History's a changing
2009-09-24 10:16:02
Erasers must be more popular in FYROM than anywhere else history keeps changing funny that.

at last
2009-09-24 10:58:57
...this monster is being changed. One thing that is worth noting however is that the two main dailies in Macedonia (Dnevnik and Utrinski Vesnik) have harshly critisised the academy of science for the publication, calling the heads of the academy ‘senile’ academicians accusing them of chauvinism and nationalism. Just to make clear that this encyclopedia is NOT supported by the broad public in Macedonia but indeed a product of men of the past.

And so the fabrication and spin continues... The Fyrom government has managed to fabricate history again. I would love to get a copy of this "encyclopedia". It would be interesting to see what other fallicies are strewn in this rag passed off as "one of the highest academic achievements of the country in the presence of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski" What a freaking JOKE!

hm

Somebody should tell Berisha to change the albanian encyclopeadia which incorporates pieces of land from all its neighboring countries in a greater albania..This is an encyclopeadia, and we are not talking about the albanians in albania, but in Macedonia..these are two different things

Good laugh
2009-09-25 13:46:45
Riiight... Albanians are not settlers. They are in fact the autochthonous population. Descended directly from the amoebae... And the UK and US did not finance and train insurgents in Macedonia and the KLA in Kosovo. Noooo, of course they did not. I think the future "revised" edition of the encyclopaedia will be an SF novel...

Encyclopedia

How the hell can everyone have their own verision of an encyclopedia. The Albanians have one version, the Greeks another, FYROM another etc. Is't what is written there history and therefore a fact? How can anyone attempt to tell teach history which is not true. I am not saying that what is in a FYROM encyclopedia is true or false because I haven't even seen it bu there cannot be two versions of history. Judging by the fact that information can be verified easily by quoting other encyclopedias I cannot imagine how can anyone try to sneak in their own version. At the end of the day I would not trust anything written by the Albanians. They claim that Alexander the great was theirs. Now as far as I know Albania wasn't even there then. Oh I forgot, they claim he was Illyrian just like them. Now that's more delusional that anything I have head of before.

Both ethnic groups have serious problems with their perceptions of history. Though I would agree that the histories differ from one region to the other. Macedo-Albanians should speak up for themselves instead of looking towards Tirana. However, Macedonians also need to learn that the imperialist age is long overdue.

No encyclopedia, or text book in greece would have this problem, due to the fact that there has NEVER been at ANYTIME anyone living in greece that is not greek! No Roman, Macedonian, Vlach, Arvanites, Italian, Albanian, Turk..etc. There has never been a minority in greece..they are all greek!!! WOW How do they do it???

We know truth because we are pople who have been in Macedonia forever! I know, all of out truth stories and scientists cant make history but they know history because that is what sceince do!

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
