Croatia is marking a day of national mourning for victims of Friday's train accident.

Six were killed and 55 wounded in the accident which occurred when a train travelling between Split and Zagreb left the tracks at 12.10 CET in the Rudine area, around 20km from Split.

A French woman and man holding dual Serbian, Spanish citizenship are among the dead, while 11 foreign nationals were also injured. None of those still in hospital are in serious condition.

Transportation Minister Bozidar Kalmeta tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor but she refused to accept.

Quoted by the local Javno news website, Kalmeta said that the train driver "remembers nothing, he doesn’t know how the accident happened, does not even know how he got out of the train and is in a state of shock".

Official inquiries continue into the cause of the derailment. It is possible that the crash was related to the extreme temperatures gripping the region at the time, though one passenger reported that the train was travelling at what he thought was an excessive speed shortly before the crash.

Television pictures showed a carriage had broken in half. Around 90 people were on board.
