Romania’s unemployment rate rose by 0.2 per cent in May to 6 per cent compared to the previous month, the National Statistics Agency, CNS, said on Monday.

The number of unemployed people at the end of May stood at 526,803, the highest number since February 2006.

The jobless rate in Romania is still one of the lowest in the European Union, however.

One reason for the fall in recent years has been the migration to Western Europe of more than 2 million people.

In related developments, average net wages rose by 8.7 per cent year on year in nominal terms in May to Lei 1,356 lei (330 euro).
