Nabucco Deal to be Signed in Mid-July

A long delayed intergovernmental accord for the construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline will be signed on July 13, Romanian press reports say.

"The accord on Nabucco will be signed in Turkey," Economy Minister Adriean Videanu said on Friday.

The 3,300-kilometre Nabucco pipeline, which will bring gas from Central Asia to Europe while bypassing Russia, is expected to become operational in 2013 with investments estimated at €9 billion.

Ankara has delayed the signing of transit agreements by demanding 15 percent of the Nabucco's 31 billion cubic metre capacity througout for its domestic usage or for re-export.

Gas would be carried via Turkey through to Austria, with the pipeline also traversing Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.

EU-backed Nabucco pipeline is a rival to South Stream, a Gazprom-led project aiming to bring Russian, Caspian and Central Asian gas to Europe.
