The International Civilian Representative in Kosovo, Pieter Feith, has said the appointment of a team to create a new Serb-majority municipality in the divided city of Mitrovica could herald a 'new beginning'.

After fresh cases of the pandemic disease are confirmed in the region, concerns grow of a possible regional H1N1 flu virus outbreak.

While health officials say the swine flu has so far not been as potent as some similar diseases such as bird flu, causing far fewer deaths, they warn that the risk of new cases is increasing with the coming of summer when people traditionally travel more often. Here is a complete timeline of the swine flu spread in the Balkans:

Albania

July 21
Albania confirmed its first swine flu case

July 22
Albania’s health authorities confirmed three more swine-flu cases, raising the number of patients with the virus to four.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

June 30
The patient is a 24-year-old woman who arrived from Latin America on June 26 and checked in to the local hospital with mild symptoms two days later. The patient's condition is good and she is being isolated and treated in her own home.

July 5
Bosnia announced its second swine flu case. The patient is a teenage girl who has returned from Australia.

Bulgaria

June 1
Bulgarian authorities registered its first case of the influenza in a man who returned from the United States.

June 5
Second swine flu case confirmed in a 7-year-old girl from the town of Blagoevgrad who had just arrived from the United States.

July 3
Total number of confirmed swine flu cases is 13. All the patients are in a stable condition.

July 9
Authorities confirmed another swine flu case in the town of Veliko Trnovo, raising the number of total to 14.

July 13
Health officials confirmed the total number of infected reached 16.

July 15
Three new cases have been detected taking the number of total to 19.

Croatia

July 3
Authorities confirmed the first case of A/H1N1 swine flu virus in a woman who has recently returned from Australia.

July 8
Two more cases of the swine flu influenza recorded in Zagreb, raising the total number of infected to five.

July 15
14 cases of the A/H1N1 influenza have been registered so far.

July 20
Over 60 high-school students from the seaside town of Sibenik returned from a school trip to Spain, reportedly diagnosed with the A/H1N1 influenza virus.

Kosovo

July 27
Kosovo has confirmed its first case of H1N1 in a nine-year-old child, the World Health Organisation, WHO, reports.

Macedonia

June 28
Macedonia reported its first suspected case of swine flu in a four-year-old child from Australia visiting relatives in the town of Prilep.

Macedonia reported second suspected case of swine flu in a 15-year-old boy from Australia visiting Prilep.

June 30
Third suspected case includes an adult male from the town of Bitola who recently stayed in Germany who has been contained in hospital.

July 2
All three cases are awaiting final confirmation.

July 6
Medical testing results from London confirmed the existence of swine flu virus in two patients.

July 9
Authorities confirmed a third case of a swine flu infection in a patient recently arrived from Germany.

July 14
Fifth confirmed case of A/H1N1 influenza has been reported.

July 15
Another four people have been confirmed to have the swine flu virus, bringing the total number of infected in the country to nine.

July 17
Three cases of swine flu cases have been registered taking the number of total infected to 13.

July 20
The 14th case of swine flu in Macedonia was confirmed over the weekend in a person who recently returned from holiday in Greece. Eleven patients are currently hospitalised, all in good condition. In all, 52 patients have been treated thus far.

July 24
Two new swine flu cases were confirmed raising the total number of those who have contracted the potentially deadly virus to 19.

August 8

Eight new patients with the swine flu have been registered, raising the total number of those infected to 37, the country’s Institute of Public Health said.

Montenegro

June 22

The Health Ministry confirmed its first case of the A /H1N1 virus in a student returning home to Macedonia on a flight from New York State in the US.

June 28
Second swine flu case confirmed, involving a patient being treated in a Podgorica hospital. He arrived in Montenegro from Peru. Four people who were in contact with him are in the same hospital.

June 30
The patient registered as the first confirmed case of swine flu is discharged from hospital.

July 1
Two more swine flu cases have been confirmed this week in Montenegro, bringing the total number of cases in that country to six. They are believed to have been infected through personal contact.

July 12
A/H1N1 virus confirmed in a person who recently returned from Slovenia raising the number of infected with the virus to 12.

July 19
Ministry of health has registered 18 cases of swine flu virus so far.

Romania

May 27
First case of swine flu confirmed in a thirty-year-old woman who came back from the United States on May 23.

June 28
Romanian Health Ministry confirmed its 25th swine flu case in a 35-year-old man who recently flew in from Spain.

July 3
The total number of confirmed swine flu cases is 35. All the patients are in a stable condition. All cases confirmed so far are in connection with persons who have visited or have come into contact with persons coming from the US, Mexico, Canada or Spain. So far, none of the A/H1N1 influenza cases confirmed in Romania have resulted in death.

July 6
The total number of infected is 46.

July 9
Total number of infected with A/H1N1 virus climbed to 50.

July 12
Authorities confirmed 51 case of swine flu virus in a Spanish man who had visited Romania.

July 15
Health officials confirmed 56 case of swine flu virus.

July 17
The total number of infected with A/H1N1 influenza has risen to 57.

July 24
Health authorities registered 18 new cases of the swine flu influenza taking the number of total infected to 95.

Serbia

June 24
The Serbian Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed the country's first case of the H1N1 flu virus in a 29-year-old Belgrade resident. The victim is believed to have contracted the virus during a visit to Argentina, according to the Health Ministry.

June 26
Second swine flu case confirmed by health officials in a girl who arrived from Australia. She has been hospitalized in the northern town of Sombor.A 29-year-old man, who was confirmed as the first case of the flu in Serbia, is stable and is currently in isolation, where he is being treated for a lung infection.

June 27
Three new cases of swine flu have now been recorded in Serbia, including the first case of secondary transmission.The new cases include a girl who came into contact with the Montenegrin man infected with H1N1 virus, and a mother and her four-year-old child who travelled from London on June 22.The three new patients are in stable condition, and have already been discharged from hospital. Total number of infected: 5

June 28
Five new A/H1N1 cases registered in Serbia, bringing the total number of the infected to ten. According to Belgrade Public Health Institute epidemiologist Predrag Kon, the new patients come from Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica and Nis. Total number of infected: 10

June 29
Health officials in Serbia confirmed another case of A/H1N1 swine flu virus in a child who came from Canada to the town of Novi Sad. Total number of infected: 11

July 1
Health officials in Serbia confirmed two more cases of A/H1N1 swine flu virus in persons who travelled from the US bringing the country’s total number of infection to 13.

July 2
Two more A/H1N1 virus cases confirmed bringing the number of total swine flu cases to 15. One of them is a student from Australia taking part in the Universiade student games in the Serbian capital.

July 6
Health officials have confirmed 21 patients with A/H1N1 virus.

July 9
Health officials confirmed another case of swine flu in a British female who came to the Exit festival in the town of Novi Sad. Total number of confirmed cases is 34.

July 13
Authorities confirmed the total number of A/H1N1 infected reached 49. Six cases were confirmed in the Universiade participants and eight in the EXIT festival visitors.

July 15
According to the Ministry of Health, 54 swine flu cases have been confirmed so far.

July 19
Health officials have registered over 100 cases of swine flu virus.

July 20
The total number of infected with swine flu influenza has risen to 109.

July 28

dear reader, in my homecountry, The Netherlands, the government is arranging a vaccinationprogramm, taking care a double vaccination for each inhabitant. this will not only reduce the death-rate, but will reduce the 30%-illness quota when the pandemy really gets going. economically thinking (apart from the human aspect) an investement in such campain is worth considering as a collapse of (the Croatian) economy at this moment would be a diaster.
