Lawyer Denies Deal for Alleged Serb Crime Boss
Belgrade | 30 June 2009 |
According to Belgrade's daily Blic, Jocic would be offered witness protection in return for helping to disclose the names of individuals involved in unsolved murder cases committed in Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Holland over the last 15 years.
Jocic's lawyer, Zdenko Tomanovic, said no deal had been offered and that his client had no intention of accepting such a deal. He also said there was no evidence of his client's involvement in the crimes for which he stands accused.
Jocic was arrested in May for his suspected involvement in the assassination of Croatian journalist and publisher Ivo Pukanic, owner of the Croatian magaine Nacional. Specifically, Jocic is expected of having ordered the assassination.
Under the alleged deal, Jocic would be required to expose the criminal organizations behind the Pukanic hit, namely Jocic's own superiors, according to media reports.
Tomanovic stood firm, telling Belgrade's daily B92: “I can’t comment on that right now. All I can say is that the defence will, before the week’s out, ask the court to make public at least one piece of evidence against Jocic, and the defence will also propose that a list be compiled of around 80 witnesses that need to be interviewed if there are any plans afoot to conduct an investigation against Jocic.”

Radovan Karadzic, Sarajevo is not your city, and you have no right to say that it is, just as you do not have the right to say in public, even if it’s in court, that someone has dug up bones around Bosnia and brought them to Srebrenica to make a fake graveyard. This is insulting.
