Yahoo Messenger is to play an important role in the country's public relations with police as of Monday, with the launch in the Romanian capital of the "Messenger Zone" project, which aims to improve communication with the general public.

The local police made public a MSN address, where citizens can send in requests and queries.

"The project is just beginning, so we ask for patience. But for sure we will answer any question which is related to our competences," said police spokeperson Christian Ciocan.

The Romanian police hope that by using online communication many people will save time and money.

Currently, there are around 12 million Internet users in Romania.
