Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York today where the discussed Kosovo and the world economic downturn, the government press service reported.

"Cvetkovic stressed that Serbia’s view was that the UN should continue to be the chief mediator in resolving all matters in the southern Serbian province," read the statement.

Cvetkovic who flew to New York to attend a UN Economic Conference on the global financial crisis’ impact on development, underlined in his informal talks with Ban, the importance of UN’s maintaining an active role in stabilising the situation, which is the only way to guarantee a palatable peace.

In New York, Cvetkovic also held informal meetings with Russian Finance Minister Aleksei Kudrin.
