There would always be ultranational extremists in each society. Anyway this dictionary is great work. Macedonian language is almost exterminated in Greece and that is big loss from cultural point of view.

The fascist attack on the promotion of the dictionary is just an outgrowth of the official Greek policy of denial of the Macedonian and other large minorities (Turks, Pomaks Albanians, and Vlahs). Official denial gives oxygen to fascist groups like this. I notice Dora and Kostas haven’t condemned this yet. Wonder why? Bravo to Vinozito. I never seen anyone so calm, when supposedly attacked. They didn't even get off their seats, a usual human reaction, when one feels threatened. One of them even takes a picture, with no reaction from the "attackers" ? Seems like a big scam to me. This is not the first time nor the last. In fact this was a relatively tame situation compared to previous events in history of Greece attacking Macedonians. Its like Germany allow over again on a small scale. Black shirts attack and the great majority of greeks stay silent. In a European country such as greece there should be at least some ethnic greeks that stand up for the non-greek minority. Alas in greece that is not the case. why do you not launch this book in a country where someone really cares or gives a damn. In Greece we know that the FRYOMIAN language is really Bulgarian.

Both sides are showing chauvenism. Greeks, because they are striving to appropriate something that was never Greek nor will be. Ancient Macedonians were Macedonians, and not Greeks. And today's Fyromians, majority of which speaks Bulgarian dialect tries to unrighteously embezzle the Macedonian identity. Come on guys, stop! The whole event is totally unacceptable. We should never allow fascists do foreign policy,promote their own agenda and most of all violate freedom of speech. Over half of the these votes are from the rest of Greece, less than half are from Macedonia. It should be very obvious that the greek responses in the forums are questioning whether this was real or a set-up. Nevermind that a dictionary from the greek language to bulgarian or vice versa portrayed as 'greek-macedonian' is INSULTING to the vast majority of real macedonian who do not speak this language. Defending the right to anyone's opinion is very different to defending the right to INSULT. Which is another reason why we need to find a name to communicate. If you want to refer to Rainbow's language, call it 'rainbow language', call it 'bulgarian', call it 'skopjan', 'fyromian', 'slav-macedonian' or whatever. Just don't call it macedonian because this is the greek idiom spoken in real macedonia. What do they reply to any real macedonian saying "how can you present this bulgarian language as mine? Or what about Livius and Pausanias ancient works about the original Makedonians? How about a full edition of the actual Demosthenes's orations and beliefs? Most probably they won't even take a permission to be published in FYROM, and we are not talking about promoting them in public...

That so many Greeks on this forum are not troubled by what those fascist thugs did, or even better, that they in the same breath renounce fascism and blame the Rainbow Party for bringing the thuggery upon itself (by launching a Greek-Macedonian dictionary!) reveals how far to the right mainstream Greek society sits, and the extent to which a culture of tolerance is lacking in the country. The fact that Greek media chose to boycott the event also bears testament to this. One would think that the launch of a Greek-Macedonian dictionary would seem like a highly newsworthy event, given the current name dispute with the Republic of Macedonia and the ongoing issues surrounding the ethnic Macedonian minority. I just couldn't imagine an event of this kind being received in the same way in any other EU member state. In a tolerant society, opponents listen to each other and respect each other’s viewpoints even when they don’t agree on all matters. Are there no Greeks out there willing to champion tolerance?

This is just a bit of rivalvry between two extremist groups with little support in Greece. Let them have their fun. I don't know what the 'break=through' is with this book though. You can get Greek-Bulgarian dictionaries everywhere. The Bulgarian language lives in and thrives in both Bulgaria and FYROMIA

There cannot be a Greek to Macedonian dictionary when Macedonian is Greek.

This whole "Real Macedonians" are Greek, and the "Slavo Makedonsi" are Blugarian speaking Slavs, is a wholly new argument in this dispute. Before Makedonia/Macedonia became an independent country, pretty much no body, not even Greeks, referred to Greek people as anything other than "Greek", let alone "Macedonian-Greek". The Greeks that live in northern area of Greece are GREEK. The people who speak slavic-Macedonian are NOT Greek, and have a long history of their ancestors fighting for their right to exist against Greek government. Greece, and those who are vitriolic against slavic speaking Macedonians, simply refuse to believe that their country has engaged, and continues to engage, in human rights violations suppressing the slavic-Macedonian language from speaking their language and from demanding to be recognized as Macedonians who do NOT speak Greek as their native tongue. My maternal ancestry is from Northern Greece where there were and are MANY slavic-Macedonian speaking Macedonians who have no inclination to identify themselves as Greek, because they simple are not. Greek government has abused those people, and have systematically ethnically cleansed Macedonians who's native tongue is slavic Macedonian and NOT Greek. Many of the population, if not most, that live in northern Greece have been forced to adopt Greek names and lose their real language to adopt Greek as their "native tongue". That was done with extreme human rights violations. Please, stop speaking of Macedonian "idiom" or "dialect" of Greek, because it simply does NOT exist. Ancient Macedonian language is NO LONGER being spoken in the modern world, much like Latin is not either. Whatever Macedonian "dialect" that may exist in northern Greece is very likely the result of slavic speaking Macedonians forced to adopt Greek as their official language, and thus slavic Macedonian is included in this made up "Macedonian-Greek dialect".

I can understand and appreciate why Greece is afraid of slavic speaking Macedonia eventually expanding it's borders, because if Greece doesn't extinguish this slavic Macedonian thing, then it could result in Greece having to answer to the world what really has happened in northern Greece over the past 100 years. Plus, slavic speaking Macedonians in northern Greece will see that perhaps someone will come to their aid and save them, and that could lead to Greece loosing hold of land that never belonged to them, but was acquired through the spoils of war, where the non Greek indigenous peoples were subjugated into loosing their identity in order to validate the continual occupation of the spoils of war. BTW, I've never heard non Greed Macedonians EVER say that they speak ancient Macedonian. They know their modern language is of Slavic origin. So, those who want to hate can stop trying to promote the idea that true Macedonians speak Greek, when history does not support your historical twist. Slavic speaking Macedonians identify with their ANCIENT Macedonian heritage because they are the indigenous population of THE land where those ancients lived. It's very much akin to Italians not speaking Latin or calling themselves "Roman", but certainly do identify their ancient ancestors as the Romans. Modern Greeks are much changed and different to their ancient Hellenic period ancestors. Should we say that modern Greeks shouldn't be allowed to identify with their ancient ancestors who lived in their current land, because there was NO such thing as "Greek" during that wonderful historic period? Spartans weren't Greek. Athenians weren't Greek. Those people were Spartans, or Athenians, etc... That's how they identify themselves. The modern greater Greek identity exists through the same history and actions that changed and shaped ALL of modern Europe, mainly through the Christanization of Europe. How you treat others is a reflection of how you view yourself. I ask that all Slavic speaking Macedonians stop any hateful speech or actions towards the Greek people. Fight with insight, logic, and understanding, not through vitriol, name calling, hatred, or abuse. Welcome ALL people who come to visit Macedonia, and treat them with kindness and respect. They come to your country because there is obviously something worth seeing. Respect that.
