Croatia's ruling Croat Democratic Party, HDZ, has suffered a major setback in local elections, losing out to the opposition for key mayoral posts.

While the HDZ did fairly well in the election for local councils, it lost virtually all major mayoral races in Sunday's poll.

After eight years in power, the ruling party lost the elections in Dubrovnik; and after twelve years in power, in Vukovar.

Zagreb, the key Adriatic port of Rijeka and Dubrovnik went to the opposition Social Democratic Party, SDP, while independent candidate billionaire Zeljko Kerum was elected mayor of Split, another major port and resort city.

In the eastern city of Osijek, the Croatian Democratic Parliament of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) party of lawmaker and convicted war criminal Branimir Glavas won most of the votes.

Local media reports quoted monitors as saying that the elections passed calmly and that irregularities were minor.
