Serbia Gay Meeting Violently Interrupted
Belgrade | 10 March 2009 |
This is a second time in two weeks that GSA's press conferences have been interrupted or canceled. Last week the management of Belgrade Sava Centre canceled a GSA's press conference, where they had planned to present their report about the current state of human rights in Serbia. The press conference was held at another location, prompting Belgrade's mayor and other officials to apologise to GSA.
''Homophobia and pulling off the procedure of anti-discrimination law caused this,'' said Boris Milicevic, president of GSA, referring to the government's decision last week to pull an anti discrimination bill from parliamentary procedure at the last moment due in part to the Church's objections to a clause on sexual orientation.
The ruling coalition has this week said the bill will be adopted by the end of April.

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
