Kosovo Serbs Defiantly 'Anti-Independence'

Zvecan | 17 February 2009 |

While Kosovo's Albanians celebrated the one-year anniversary of their declaration of independence on Tuesday, Serb and Kosovo Serb politicians gathered defiantly in the northern Kosovo town of Zvecan on Tuesday to proclaim their rejection of the secession and flaunt Belgrade's reach in Serb-controlled parts of Kosovo where Pristina has no authority.

The Assembly of Serbian Municipalities and Towns in Kosovo and Metohija unanimously adopted a declaration that rejects Kosovo's declaration of independence and also opposes the creation of the Kosovo Security Force, Kosovo's fledgling army, saying it is against the constitution of Serbia and UN Security Council resolution 1244.

"The Assembly of Serbian municipalities in Kosovo and Metohia reject as invalid and without legal validity all acts and undertakings which unilaterally declares Kosovo independence and form institutions of the so-called Kosovo state," said Radovan Nicic, speaker of the Assembly.

The meeting was attended by Serb MPs from conservative and nationalist parties, another sign of defiance towards the Albanian authorities in Pristina and Kosovo's international overseers, which have warned Serbia against consolidating its authority in Kosovo's Serb north for fear of a partition. Serbian Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic said Serbia was unwavering in its claim over Kosovo.

"This declaration in political sense has very big importance and sends a very clear message from Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija to the international community and Albanians as well, that Serbia and Serbs
in Kosovo and Metohija do not want to renounce its territory on Kosovo and Metohija," he said.

"Only united can we solve and fight the problems of Serbs and other non-Albanians are facing in Kosovo and Metohija.”

Marko Jaksic, a hardline Serb leader from Mitrovica, said the reason why they wanted the Serbian parliamentarians to be present on their session "on this unlucky date" was to show that "there can never be another Albanian state in the Balkans."

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008 and so far has been recognised by most EU and NATO member countries. Serbia and its traditional ally Russia are opposing the secession and blocking Kosovo's entry into the United Nations.  Kosovo Serbs additionaly asked the government in Belgrade to take legal action against any countries that recognized Kosovo as a sovereign state.

Albanians have a second state now, but the more important question that entirely rests with the Serbs is whether they want to participate in this new state or not. And if they don't, as so far this is unfortunately the path that they chose, then it will be more for the Albanians. True, there are other ethnicities in Kosova, however it is not right for the Serbs to be speaking on their behalf as if their rights are being abused. They are participating, there are members in the parliament, and the ordinary citizens are active in the communities. So let the other minorities speak for themselves, please. I just do not get this Serb neo-nationalism: on one hand they boycott and undermine everything coming from Kosova's legitimate authorities (last time I checked almost the entire western world recognizes this authority), and on the other hand they complain that in this new state there is no future for them because Albanians won't allow it. And I ask what kind of a child's play is this? This behavior of a kindergarden girl will not gain much. I say get on with it, nobody is being impressed by this behavior, and if anybody is going to pay a price of such conduct, it will be the new Serb generations in Kosova who will pick up the tab. Don't undermine their future. Remember that what you plant today they will be harvesting tomorrow, and it is shameful and a a tragedy to behave with such ignorance and intolerance and undermine the lives of the future Serb generations. Smarten up!!!

If you were so passionate about sharing your country with someone else why didn't you stay with Czechs Ivan? Talk some sense mate! Kosovans have the right to self rule and the Serbian minority should make an effort to integrate and build a better country and a better life for everyone and stop moaning.

Kosovo

The Kosovo government worries that the Serb areas in the north will break away. This is amusing, since that's exactly what the Kosovo government did. I suppose it takes one to know one. Really, one Albania is enough. Poor Serbia!

In my school book, before Serbs taked Kosovo territory it was part of Byzantine Empire (and before - Roman Empire). And after turkish conquest - part of Turkish Empire. After Turkey - it was Serb territory. What time Kosovo wast part of any albanian state?? Only 1941-45 when Kosovo was part of fascist italian Albania. Than who is occupant??

If that was what really the books taught you, you should not be blamed for the history ignorance than. It is not your fault. If I were you, and as a self-respectable man who wishes to expend upon a mediocre history knowledge, I would find who published those books and I would address them academically. On the other hand, if such lesson suit your gusto, well, one can immediately see why Slovakia has substantially lacked behind compare the other one, the Chezch Republic.

"Albanoi"? haaahaaaahaaa
2009-02-20 10:52:24
"history ignorance"? Please tell me when Kosovo was part of any albanian state in the past? Mayby You think about mythic Illyrins form 2000 years ago? No way my friend. I know this history. Do You think, that illirian tribe "Albanoi" are Your ancestors?? haaahaaaahaaa. Sorry man - but only connections with this name is fact, that in 13th century Charles of Anjou created "Regnum Albaniae" who used ancient tribe name. At this time Albanians don't used name "Albanians" but "Arbër", "Arbën", "Arbëreshë" ;) Than why You use name "Albanians" today? Only becouse You need mythic ancestors. Soory man - but academic books talk that Albanian orgin is unclear. European (not Serb or Slovak)scientists don't know that Albanians are descendants of Illyrians or mayby Thracians or Dacians or mayby Messapians and Iapyges from Italy? If somethink is unclear - than You can talk that Kosovo was Your territory forever. Only Albanians wrote that they are in 100% illyrians descendants. Mayby this verion of history is good for Shqiptars (this name was first time noted in 14th century!), but not for the rest of Europe. This wersion is only to prove claims for Kosovo territory. P.S. Mayby Czech Republic have some better economy than Slovakia, but Kosovo Republic... Sorry - but is like Black Africa.

Dear Ivan, I'm not going to waste too much time talking about our History. I suggest you to not open this argument. They are many independent sources who treat it. I'm afraid that if you read them, you will find that we had an developed society when your ancestors were living on trees. Anyway, to be more productive, actually we are part of modern story. We are proud to belong to western democracy far away from the autocracy. We are keeping to break up the last chains of robbery from your sick medieval serbian orthodox nationalism. We are looking forward. If you want to follow us, you're welcomed otherwise you may stay where you are. By the way, I like your laugh ;-)

yeah...

Adrian, Adrian... Lot of words but any facts... You wrote about trees... Mayby we live in any time in forests, but where was Albanians in the times when all "barbaric" tribes created their own countries and created high class culture?? If they are illyrian descendants - they lived 1000 years on the territory of civilized Imperium Romanum and Byzantine Empire. Than where is preserbian, albanian high culture? Where is preserbian albanian literature? Where is preserbian albanian monumental architecture? "Barbaric" tribes from North - can create high class culture and literature only few centuries after contact with roman or byzantine culture (eg. first germanic language literature - gothic Bible by Wulfila - in IV century! or Mausoleum of Theodoric from VI century). Slovakian literature in our own language started in 9th century. In same time started our monumental architecture (churches, castles, palaces etc.). Serbian monumental architecture started too in 9th century and their own language literature in 12th century. And "civilized" Albanians? Nation who live 1000 years on the territory of Imperium Romanum and Byzantine Empire and was influenced by therir culture? You Albanians wrote that "barbaric" Serbs occupied "albanian Kosovo" - but where's evidence of "civilized" Albanians on Kosovo territory before Serbs? Where's evidence of pre serbian, albanian castles, churches, palaces, monasteries? Where pre-serbian kosovo albanian literature? If You Albanians was so important nation in pre-Serbian Kosovo - than where are any marks of them? Where are albanian (pre-serbian) names of Kosovo's places? 98% names of all Kosovo places have serb orgin! Albanian names - are only "albanized" versions of orginal serb names (like "Kosova" - from serb "Kosovo"). Where are "orginal" albanian names? You know that 1100 years before territory of today Hungary was part of slovakian (capital in Nitra) empire of Great Moravia and until today lot of hungarian place names have slovakian/slavic origin - like Lake Balaton (from slovak Blatenské jazero), Esztergom (from Slovak Ostrihom), Visegrád (from slovak Vyšehrad), Pécs - similar to serbian Peć in Kosovo, hungarian capital - Budapest - is form from 2 cities Buda (slovak Buda - from slovak name Budimir) ans Pest (slovak Pešť - from slavic "pec" = "oven")... Where was Albanians, when all neighbour nations created their national countries in 7th-9th century? First (very small - only area surrounding city of Kruja) Albanian state was created in 1190 - first state of "barbaric" Serbs was created in 7th century... Ps. You are proud thay You are part of Western Democracy. I'm not proud for "democracy" who cut part of independent country, becouse one minority don't like their authorities. Good Day Adrian ;)

What part of history matters?
2009-04-24 23:42:45
Ivan, you are just wasting your time, my friend. Maybe you have personal reasons of hating Albanians, but your understanding of history is flawed at best. Anyway, ancient history (Constantine the Great, Valerian, Aurelian, Diocletian, Constantius Chlorus, Justinian the Great and other Roman emperors of Illyric stock, without mentioning Byzantine/Ottoman statesmen who claimed Albanian origin)is not important in asserting whether Kosovo should be a state or a Serbian province. The important fact is that Kosovo has been an autonomous territory within Yugoslavia (careful, not Serbia but Yugoslavia)like Vojvodina, during Tito's regime. And guess what, everybody wished to live in peace during Tito's regime. There was no ethnic strife or violence, and the country was the most prosperous and desirable of all Communist countries. Then, when Tito passed away (R.I.P) and the economy began to shatter, several nationalistic groups in Belgrade took over and, in order to establish Serbia as the ruling state of Yugoslavia decided to revoke the autonomy of Kosovo and Vojvodina in order to increase the voting power of the Serbian government in the Federation. This way Serbia had 3 votes and more often than not could count on the vote of Montenegro too. In the meanwhile Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia had one vote each, and even by joining together could not overcome Serbia's voting power. Thus was the Serbian rule firmly established in the 1980s and Tito's dreamland of 6 main ethnicities, 3 religions and 4 languages slipped into several ethnic/civil wars with the consequences we all know. The Kosovo war was the last war of secession from Yugoslavia, and as such it should be treated. Kosovo is not a breakaway province from Serbia, but an ex-autonomous region of Yugoslavia which decided it could no longer be part of this federation due to violations of civil and human rights and the ethnic cleansing and atrocities commited by state authorities and paramilitars of Serbia in this region in 1998-1999. This is the part of history that, on my opinion, really matters. If we start going back in time, every ethnicity will lay claim to Kosovo as cradle of its civilization, and no one will know what the hell is going on anymore.
