Mosque Burned in Bosnia on Muslim Holiday

Sarajevo
A mosque has been set alight in the eastern Bosnian village of Fazlagica Kula, only hours ahead of the beginning of the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adha, or Kurban Bajram.

The village is located in the southeastern part of the Serb-dominated entity of Republika Srpska, near the town of Trebinje. Numerous mosques were razed in that area during Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war.

The Fazlagica Kula mosque was set alight on Sunday night, officials from the Islamic community confirmed.

Local media reported that the inside of the mosque and its roof were completely burned down.

Although the investigation into this incident was still ongoing and the cause for the fire was still unconfirmed, Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) officials reacted strongly, demanding from the Bosnian Serb leadership and police to swiftly indentify and arrest the culprits.

In a letter sent to Republika Srpska leadership, premier of the other Bosnian entity of Bosniak-Croat Federation, Nedzad Brankovic, said that this “gross vandalism” was an attack against Muslim believers and Bosniak returnees to the area.

“Burning of the mosque in Fazlagica Kula, at the time when believers were supposed to carry out their religious duties, is a proof that there are still retrograde forces who want to prevent the return of trust,” Brankovic said.

Brankovic also offered assistance from Federation institutions in identifying and apprehending the culprits.

The entire village of Fazlagica Kula was completely destroyed during the war. Some homes were rebuilt after the war and several Bosniak families have returned there, despite several incidents and attacks. The mosque itself was reconstructed few years ago.

On Monday, Muslims in Bosnia and all over the world celebrated Kurban Bajram, the Festival of Sacrifice, in commemoration of the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

Horrible but not suprising. Keep pushing and sooner or later there will be a response from the so called radical Bosniaks.

God damn them

While it is surely so that there are some very decent Serbs around, there are still a lot of beastly Islamophobes around and I hope that they are severely punished. in Germany there are always police around the Jews' synagogues. However for Bosnia this is not a viable solution as many policemen in "RS" were among the war criminals during the war I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw a truck. Why not contract some private security men to protect he Muslims' places of worship? Then other ugly incidents could be avoided like some Son of a... pissing againstthe mosque. It certainly would not help if soem of our brethren would in retaliation set an Orthodox church or monastery alight even though I have to add that I absolutely HATE the Orthodox clergy, especialy those who mouth Islamophobic statements. And if theSerbs don't finally distance themselves from their anti-Muslim attitude, they will one day have to face the consequences, and the blood of innocents that they have spilled will indeed come over their heads, and as I have said many times before: THE CROSS WILL NEVER CHASE THE CRESCENT FROM THE BALKANS!!!! No matter what futile attempts they try! And I challenge those pro-Serb commentators who have so often bad-mouthed the Bosniaks on this site, and who defend war criminals and try to relativise, deny or justify the Serb war crimes (and with the old stories of crimes committed in WWII or in the times of the Ottoman Empire at that - and I say if the Turks had really been that bad and behaved towards non-Muslimsa as the Serbs do today we would now not have this kind of problems in the Balkans and most of these people would be Muslims now)to answer me. But if they can't come up with anything new other than insults or lies (and I know they can't for they don't have a thing to stand on. They started this war only so they could rob the Bosniaks of their lives, of their land, of their possessions, their loved ones, their houses, their history. And EVERYTHING I hate is embodied in these Cetniks!)then I tell them: Shove it. And teh next time around the boot will indeed be on the other foot.

I'm realy disgusted by kosovar's serbophobia and i think that balkaninsight must put an end to this beacuse kosovar's post is a clear breach of balkaninsight's policy How is calling a whole nation "a bunch of animals" and threatening :"the time will come when serbs will pay for all their crimes" and "we will take serbia too and send you back to carpathian mountains" considered constructive and polite contribution. And as for burned mosque i sincerely hope that bosnian police will find vandals responsible for this crime ..

Yes, a whole nation...

..is guilty of war crimes if they don't distance themselves from them. So far I have heard no word of apology from the Serbs for the genocide committed aganst the Bosniaks, neither from officials nor from the ordinary citizen, so in their minds they must approve of allthese things. And since the most horrible crimes - mass murder, rape, torture, robbery, destruction of irreplaceable cultural property have been comitted by Serbs and withthe approval of the majority of the Serbs it is no wonder that many people outside Serbia and most of the Muslims see them as genocidal, murderous savages. They have brought this image and this reputation onto themselves. THat you sincerely hope the culprits are caught - well I don't believe you. THe "RS" police is not interested. THey are the very same ones who committed rape at Vilina Vlas and in Foca and who participated in the genocide at Srebrenica. And the culprits are not just vandals. This was ordered from the top. It would not surprise me if they themselves belonged to the "RS" police. But if they are caught they should be sentenced to at least 40 years. And the Bosniaks would be well advised to engage a private security service to protect their sites of worship against such acts because the police of the "RS" can't be trusted to do that. PD: So the Ferhadija in Banja Luka is now slowly being rebuilt. What for? So the Cetniks can destroy it again or desecrate it whenever the mood strikes them? What reconciliation can be achieved with people who don't want reconciliation? Since the Serbs refuse reconciliation, one day the Bosniaks and the Kosovars will eventually take revenge. Yes, the time will come when the Serbs will pay for all their crimes. And if it takes 500 or 1000 years! Then it will be the great-great-great-grandsons of today's criminals who will have to pay for their ancestors' crimes. And I tell you next time around it will be them who will cry the most bitter tears! And as for myself, if it is not given to me to witness this, even beyond death I will hate them!

I do condemn attacks on any places of worship and many more people will agree with me from all religions but you can't seem to grasp that. You condemn all for actions of few. I can also say I HATE all the Muslims for what Oric did and many like him. What, do you think that only you have the monopoly on suffering? Do your people ever intend to apologize to the Serbs for the crimes they committed against the innocent Serbian civilians? I guess not, so until that happens and you also demand from your own to apologize don't come here and spew your hatred. Get your head out of the sand and realize that everyone in the Balkans suffered and everyone has committed crimes. War is brutal and this happens. It doesn't make it right but it's reality. I suppose the only reality for you is that Serbs should be hated and Muslims (all of them) were innocent little lambs.

Pure PROPAGANDA!
2008-12-11 02:03:29
Gee, its great to see this site is reporting the REAL news! Where are the reports of the Serbian Churches that have been destroyed! Over 130 Orthodox churches have been destroyed in Kosovo by MUSLIMS. Most of these churches date back more than 500 years. Before the US ever existed! NONE of these churches has so far been rebuilt! Why not try to be a credible news site and report about the real issues and stop making unsubstantiated accusations against the Serbians by Muslim propaganda!

well spoken, you worthy representant of an accursed nation. Go on spewing your islamophobic and revisionist hate and your hypocrisy. It won't avail you nothing. You don't need to tell me your name for me to know who you are and what you stand for. But I will show you my colors: Islam in Bosnia will prevail! There has been a Bosnia before and it will be there when you are long gone. Karadzic and the likes of him will perish! And I say "the"Serbs because a vast majority, not just a few approved of, and actually took part in the Bosnian genocide. The decent Serbs - that is, those who refused themselves to Milosevic and Karadzic - have all quit the land or if they haven't they are harassed and attacked or have been murdered (in the old Serb tradition which did not even stop before the king. Remember the murder of the House of Obrenovic?). despite alltheir whining about how they sufered in WWII at the hand of teh Germans: The Cetniks, be they under Draza Mihajlovic or under Milan Nedic, collaborated with the Nazis, and after they had destroyed most of the Jews they went for the Muslims - like in 1992! And these people continue withtheir old and genocidal ideas: Let's wipe out all people we don't like, anywhere we like, and then we will have Paraedise! Ah. butthe whole world is against us and anybody who does not see things from our standpoint is teh enemy and must be liquidated. Well, the Japanese thought like that from 1878 until 1945 too, and look what a bloody lesson in humility they were taught. Time you were too.

Propaganda on all Sides preventing peace
2008-12-12 04:14:55
It seems it will be difficult to have peace on all sides because everyone is pointing their fingers and want to be rewarded as the vindictive victim perpetuating the revenge and violence for future generations. All share the violence from the distant past and into modern times. from ottoman times into the future. Muslim-Christian violence isnt new and it will continue into the future. It started from the times of Mohoammed- Crusades and into the balkans.

It's not that simple Alan...
2008-12-12 15:12:36
In this war ther was one clearly evident aggressor and one clearly evident victim. Yet, it would be high time that they all would get the idea that their neighbors aren't going away, and for that the rebuilding of the places of worship and a solemn pledge by all sides to accord the others the same respect they expect for themselves would be the only solution. If not, how can today's people claim to be better than in the Dark Ages? And humanity today has much more pressing and important problems. If Germany and France could come to terms with each other, and the USA and Japan, and even Greece and Turkey are no longer as sore at each other as they used to be, it is high tim ethe people in teh Balkans got over it. But there are some who committed crimes of such hideousness and magnitude they can never be forgiven. Now somebody might say all sides committed crimes, but one had it all planned beforehand, and that side committed the majority of the crimes with one clearly established aim. So it is only just that this side shouls share the greater part of the blame. It is also high time the young people in Bosnia are no longer taught a biased version of history. But who could be entrusted to write it for them?

Serbophobic Abdul
2008-12-19 07:35:28
Abdul, tell me exactly how I have shown my Islamophobia. I have stated that everyone has committed crimes in Bosnia and that includes the Muslims. I have stated that until the Muslim apologize for their crimes against the Serbs they have no right to expect an apology. Now you can call me whatever you like, but show me where in my post I spewed hatred for the Muslims on anyone else. I am simply putting all in the same basket. If you feel that Muslims were indeed innocent little lambs then I don't think we have anything to discuss. You clearly are an ostrich.

Islamophobic 'Peggy'
2008-12-23 00:37:31
Well, you have proved more than once by your statements that you support and stand for Karadzic, Mladic, Milosevic and thus for what they stand for: genocide against the Muslims of the former Yugoslavia And it is evil and base to place the same blame on the victims, namely Muslims, and the aggressor, the Cetniks. This is tantamount to saying that the German and European Jews must share part of the blame for the Holocaust. Ah, but I forgot: Serb chauvinists have become so self-deluded by their crazy ideas that they believe them to be the gospel truth themselves, and then of course they lash out against anyone who dares to contradict them. And of course the Bosniaks and the Kosovars are to blame. They are guilty of being there, of existing. And do you know something? They will continue to do so. They're not going anywhere. It's the likes of you who are an ostrich. Medieval dreams of a crusade and 19th century chauvinist ideas won't get the Serb people anywhere. On the contrary, a time will come when the world will realize that a rogue country can't be allowed to continue being a danger to its neighbors nad then it will be rendered harmless, just like Japan was in 1945. And in the end, bitter as defeat was for them, they benefitted from it, because before 1945, even though Japan held Taiwan, Korea and Manchuria and had quite some industry, for the most it was a backwards agrarian country and most of its people were poor. 15 years after the war, even though it had lost all its overseas possessions, Japan enjoyed a higher standard of living and a larger degree of freedom than any of her neighbors, and has done so ever since. Unfortunately, chauvinism and nationalism still persist, but at least aggression and militarism have been removed from Japan's political agenda for good. Time it happened in the Balkans too. But no, Serb leaders continue to pursue nationalist and chauvinist politics. And many Serbs prefer to bury their heads in the sand and follow these people who keep them in poverty and ignorance just to further their power, and they all together continue to face their neighbors and the outside world with mistrust, malice and hatred. And so history will have to repeat itself. About what will happen then I don't want to speculate. In any case the Serbs have for so long justified all the evil they did with their alleged oppression under the Ottoman Turks. Now the Bosnian Muslims can say, and they will even in 1000 years, how the Serbs oppressed them from 1918 on, and that in 1992 they tried to exterminate them. So they will have much more reason to retaliate. And the Bosnian Muslims are not, have never been and never will be Wahhabis. They just love and cherish their homeland. And just like many North Africans who even after 500 years remember that the homeland of their ancestors was Spain (or rather Al Andalus), they will remember forever, and never forgive.

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
