"Macedonia 'Name' Solution Before EU Talks"

Brussels _ “A negotiated and mutually acceptable solution on the name issue remains essential," if Macedonia is to start EU accession talks this year, the bloc warns.

For Greek Prime Minister, Costas Karamanlis, the summit conclusions are a clear signal that Macedonia cannot start accession talks with the European Union without a solution to the 'name' row between Athens and Skopje.

Furthermore the Greek premier added that the first-ever reference to the "name issue" by the EU Council is also a significant development.

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa late on Thursday night admitted that Macedonia might face hurdles in beginning accession talks, despite the engagement of the Slovenian side.

"There are some conditions that need to be met which are not completely in the remit of the EU institutions," Jansa said.

Slovenia was hoping it might have the support to put on the final conclusions of the summit that EU candidate Macedonia can start accession talks before the end of this year. However, Greece objected this line demanding a solution to the 'name' row be made a condition for Macedonia's continued EU integration.

Athens objects to Macedonia's use of its constitutional name 'Republic of Macedonia' arguing it implies Skopje's territorial claims over the Greek province of the same name.

United Nations-mediated talks on the dispute have been ongoing for 17 years and relations between the two countries sank to a fresh low in April when Greece blocked Macedonia's bid to join NATO because of the unresolved dispute.

Many European politicians argue the mentioning of the 'name' row is only in the spirit of good neighbourly relations which are a necessary condition for EU membership.

French president Nikola Sarkozy, who has openly admitted that he supports Greece in the dispute, told Macedonian journalists they should learn to love Greece and “advises FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - the country's provisional name adopted at the UN amid Greek opposition) to reach a compromise.”

At a press conference after the EU summit, Sarkozy said that he should have taken Macedonian journalists with him to Athens so they could see firsthand how close Greece and France are.

Sarkozi is in bed with Karamanlis, that is why he loves the Greeks so much.Sarkozi dont understand one thing, Greece is breaking the Human Rights againts its citizens in Greece.Greece is afraid of recognizing the Macedonian ethnicity which is conrary to their purity. For the record,Greece is nor pure, there are Macedonians,Albanians, vlahs and Turks. Athens its srlf has 400 thousands of Albanians alone, over 500 thousands of Macedonians and I dont mean like Karamanlis that claimes is Macedonian. As a matter of fact, Karamanlis is pontious from Asia Minor. He is not even a Greek, only connection he has is religion. In 1924-1926 Greece exchanged population with Turkey. The people from Turkey were not Greek, and when they setled in Northern Greece, they did not speak Greek. We called them(Prosvigi).Mr. Sarkozi, did you know that? Are you in the same mentalaty as your friends in Greece? I gues money talks as usual.

Sarkozi, do you know what your friend Karamanlis is doing to the Jewish community in Athens? You are a Jew,Why are you not defending that community? The Macedonian Minority is fighting for them in Greece. Shame on you,you have sold out your own.The judge in Athens told the Jewish complainants to not re-apear in court, the Neo-Nazis will harm you.Thats the justice you support?

Bad luck to FYROM

FYROM should find a different name and its own culture and history and not steal it from Greece. Macedonia has been Greek for over 4000 years. A lot of countries are waking up to FYROM's lies.

Finally the EU leaders start to reallize how correct is the greek position regarding the Fyrom's name. Now it is up to Skopje goverment to amend its own hard line and sit on the table to discuss a fair solution so they can profit of it and stablelise their own relation with Greece and in the region in general. greeks are good people and fyromians aswell. the dutch

It looks as if "Macedonia" is on the run. Gruevski can still ensure that his people and language are referred to as Macedonian, except in Greece, where it can be called slav-Macedonian. He can agree to a compromise on the name as long as these conditions are met. He can even put Greece on the back foot and insist that the slav-Macedonian minority in Greece be given rights.

Macedonia name solution before eu talks

Mr Sarkozy; please find a solution for your own country's internal problems(RACE RIOTS and MURDER, UNEMPLOYMENT And HUMAN RIGHTS), for newcomers to FRANCE!! Stop meddling into things that have nothing to do with you. According to a clip on U TUBE; where it is obvious; you Mr Sarkozy are DRUNK. Your approoval rating of 23% speaks for itself. As far as the EU is concerned; If the EU is dumb enough to allow the greeks to use them for their own goals, then so be it. Shame on you greece!! You bully of the Balkans.

FINALLY Eu Government did the right thing,by attaching the name dispute with Greece as a condition to the entry. Every Country, that does not respects human rights, free elections and the history of their neighbours, does not deserve entrance into the Eu Community. This decision should be a lesson also to Turkey as it is going to be the next one that needs to meet the same conditions. Rest my case! Please read the article below. BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union told Macedonia on Friday it must resolve a row with EU member Greece over its name to get a date to start membership talks, but did not rule out new steps this year towards entry. "Maintaining good neighbourly relations, including a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution on the name issue, remains essential," said a draft final statement from a meeting of EU leaders. The draft, obtained by Reuters, said further steps "are possible by the end of this year" if all conditions are met. Macedonia, which split from Yugoslavia in 1991, has the same name as Greece's most northerly province. Athens says Skopje must use a compound name such as "New" or "Upper" Macedonia and already blocked Macedonia's bid at a NATO summit in April to be invited to join the defence alliance. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said late on Thursday resolving the name dispute was also key to advancing ties with the EU. "What I can say for certain is that Macedonia will be given a date to resume negotiations as soon as all conditions are fulfilled," he said after the first day of talks. "There are some conditions that need to be met which are not completely in the remit of the EU institutions," he said, citing "the issue of the name." Gunfights and fraud during Macedonia's June 1 elections did not help Skopje's case. In the summit draft, the EU called on Macedonia to ensure that elections due next year would be free and fair, and to crack down on corruption and organised crime. The choice is all yours!!!
2008-06-21 14:59:10
Do you now see "Macedonians"??? Do you see that you cannot mess with Greece??? Without Greece, you are nothing and nobody can help you win the battle over Greece, not even the US. As the time will be passing your fake country will put itself in a position that it will destroy itself finally. No accession EVER, in any international organization (NATO or the EU), no economic development EVER, no political stability EVER, no country to help you EVER, and finally... the destruction of your fake country by the albanians! Keep going to the road that your nationalistic politicians of VMRO have crossed for you. The end of this road is YOUR END. Or you can finally agree in a composed name with Greece like New Macedonia or North Macedonia, and keep existing with economic prosperity and development and of course...peace. The choice is all yours. Change your consitutional name NOW (just becasue Greece wants and nobody else... that's true) or YOU DON'T EXIST IN SOME YEARS! At the end of the day you have nothing to do with macedonia. You are slavs, and you must accept your real identity. No more stealing Greece's history and culture with no consequences. TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR YOU! As I said, two choices ONLY: 1) Change your name IMMEDIATELY. 2) Get destreoyed by the albanians in a few years! The choices is all yours. Greece will still be happy, whatever choice of the two you make!!!

to EU
2008-06-21 17:27:38
Dear Eu, Your demand that Macedonia solves “the name problem” is an absurd request. How can you ask the Macedonians to “negotiate the end of their existence” as a solution to an non existent “name” problem? Needless to say, there is no “name problem”, the Greeks just want the Macedonians exterminated. By asking the Macedonians to accept a new artificial identity you’re committing an identity genocide. Genocide is your solution to the “Macedonian question”. A bloodless genocide, since you don’t like to see blood, you don’t like refuges, and you like to keep the false image of free and democratic Europe. You and the Greeks have come up with an interesting 21 Century invention - a democratic genocide: The power of a nation to self erase. Instead of having the Greeks do it, the historical way, you’ve decided, with the help of a knife against their throat, to make them do it to themselves. “No one who is a Jew can become a human being without knowing that he is a Jew, since this is the basis from which he can reach out towards a higher humanity. This holds good for all nations and races. Nationalism – disagreeable as it is – is therefore a sice qua non, but the individual must not remain stuck in it.” - Carl Jung So what you, Dear EU are trying to achieve for your dear member nation Greece is bully the Macedonians into starting to believe that they’re someone else. Into renaming them and with that disconnecting them from their ancestors, their roots, themselves. Dear Eu, you’re all intelligent people and you know that what you’re doing is a crime, but none the less, you ignore it and hope that it’s going to go away. You can ignore it for now, and you can continue to bully and blackmail the Macedonians to commit a suicide, but for how long and what higher purpose? Peace? Democracy? Justice? Equality? And even if you succeed to kill the Macedonians, there will be blood. Because you don’t kill a nation without blood. Your attempt is an absurd. Whatever you’re trying to build, a rigid empire, or a democratic union, you can’t build it with discrimination, injustice and demanding the absurd. With absurd criteria and absurd regulations and absurd demands, you’ll become an absurd, too. How far do you think you’re going to get in your pursuit of discrimination, injustice, genocide, bully and blackmail. Are those characteristic of a free and democratic world? This had been tried many times before, and has only caused a lot of death and suffering. And what’s next if Macedonia doesn’t yell to your absurds? Isolation or concentration camps? It’ll be interesting to see what will the new, free EU come up with next. Sincerely, A Macedonian awaiting your next “free and democratic” blow.

No EU invite?
2008-06-21 20:35:21
I guess that means no invite to EU either, eh? Time to find a mutually aggreed name me thinks :)) Can i get the ball rolling by suggesting the following as possible compromise names: Republic of: (citizens: ) 1. Vardarska, (Vardaskans) 2. Skopje(Skopjians) 3. Novamakedonjia (Novamakedojians) 4. Republic of Skopje & Tetovo (Slavomacedonians & Albanians) 5. Slavomakedonjia (Slavomakedojians) Not a complete list, but a good starting point I think. Off course the alternative option is to stay out of NATO & EU, and see at least half of FYROM become part of Albania.

Macedonia
2008-06-21 21:57:57
Macedonia does not have to be in EU.Greece is afraid if Macedonia is a member of the EU.Greeces Human Rights are dismal at best.Furtheremore, The name can not be changed for a simple reason,Would mean Macedonia will loose its identity.Without ethnicity we would be nobody, and that will never happen.Greece should go back to 1989 and call the Macedonian area as Northern Greece. This will change the whole situation between Greece and Republic of Macedonia.

Macedonia in the EU
2008-06-22 05:57:23
Macedonia should stop attempting to appease the UN, the EU and Greece, by even toying with the idea of changing the constitutional name of the nation. What many of you have to realize is, Macedonia has had the name "Republic of Macedonia" since it was given the status of a constitutional Federal Republic within the Yugoslav Federation. It is not a recent phenomenon that Macedonia 'acquired' the name Republic of Macedonia, rather, the recognition of the Macedonian state during the 1940's was the realisation of a centuries old struggle by the Macedonian people to affirm there existence, and their right to statehood. Furthermore, Greece violated certain provisions in the Interim Agreement of 1995, during the April NATO summit in Bucharest, relating to blocking Macedonia's entry into international organizations under the provision name - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Therefore, Macedonia should suspend talks with Greece, reiterate its stance once more, and get on with the show, by reaching agreement with as many nations as it can, to formally recognize the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional and legal name - the name chosen by the Macedonian people for their state. Only via these measures, and a more militaristic stance towards Greece and the EU can Macedonia attain its goals. When more and more NATO, UN and EU members recognise Macedonia under its constitutional name, Greece will be backed into a corner, and will have to acknowledge its defeat.

Question for the inhabitants of FYROM? What was your people’s national identity when your "country" was part of Yugoslavia and called Vardarska??? If your answer is "Macedonian" then this is a great example of how your country has had a different name to what your people believe it to be. So then tell me why changing your country’s name once again will affect you national identity? You are not entitled to monopolise the term "Macedonia" you will have to change your name to differentiate yourselves from the Greek Macedonians and descendants of the Ancient Macedonians! JUST DO IT!!!! I am a real Macedonian from Greece just like Alexander the Great! (NOT A SLAV) Ps. How can there be a Macedonian Minority in Greece when Macedonians are a Majority in northern Greece??? Maybe claiming there is a Bulgarian minority in Greece would be a better avenue for you Slavs?

Peter, are you reading?
2008-06-23 05:54:36
I told you before and I am telling you again: Macedonia and Thrace were under the Ministry of Norhern Greece but they were always just that -Macedonia, Thrace. Their regional names never changed. Don't you read? Where are you getting this false information from? Do you know that your name is Greek and it means rock or stone? Take it easy and read some independent sources or you will run the risk of getting your brains "petrified"!

Let the Vardar be your guide
2008-06-23 10:34:09
Whatever pros and cons for either side on this 'issue', let me just throw in another paramater. I don't think FYRoM can exist as a viable state in the future without direct access to the sea, which means none other than a FTZ at the port of Thessaloniki, ahead of both EU and Schengen Pact(!) membership. And even with membership in both of the latter agreements, it is still not enough! Infrastructure and abolition of even the most minor redtape barriers on the movement of people, goods, services and capital will be necessary for this current "anti-Switzerland" of the southern Balkans to develop and become wholly stable. Spare us the farcical "oh, we'll go thru (the longer and provincial) Albanian and Bulgarian routes" leitmotif, the Republic of 'Macedonia' is geographically positioned to only "flow" like a drain north to south, much like the Vardar/Axios, it's been that way since late antiquity, as the aficionados of the *borat-like* www.historyofmacedonia.org can attest to. Lastly, the barber shop preoccupation with "identity" and "language" is getting old and will get you nowhere very quick in the EU during an era of 140$ oil. The worst US administration in modern times, bar none, is also "history", it is now time for the Slav Macedonian leadership in Skopje to state, clearly, whether: a) we won't change anything regardless of whatever consequences, the interim agreement is null and void, no further talks necessary, or, b) these are our proposals for a mutually acceptable solution to the "name issue" For the 1,000th time, Greece requests a composite name that includes a geographic denominator/qualifier before the word "Macedonia" for all international uses. We'll let our great grandchildren debate whether this is fair or not, legal or not, justified or not, nice or not.

on macedonian matters
2008-06-23 11:14:06
It looks like I finally met a bulgarman Peter. Peter I am an ethnic macedonian Greek from Florina. I will never change my ethnicity. I will never sell off my macedonian greek name for no one. So the process of demacedonization finally succeded? We, the original macedonian greeks are the core of our nation. A Macedonian greek born macedonian greek will perish. The Macedonian history belongs to macedonian greeks who are the true descendants of Alexander the Makedon, Aristoteles, king Fillip II, Perdicas, Ptolemaios, and so many others macedonian greeks. Unfortunately some "macedonians" had been yanitsari during german occupation of our land 1941-44 when they became collaborators of Bulgarian army (Kaltchef) and the german nazzis. Everyone who calls himself true macedonian is greek by name. So the right of self-determination applies only to you? Interesting approach. It looks like you are approaching the epicenter of macedonian issue

2008-06-23 14:26:30
These people who claim Macedonia is greek are the same ones who said Macedonia didn't exist, or "no such thing" prior to 1989. Now its greek! Lol! Please! Don't make me laugh. Here's an example of the "so called" Macedonian's that say their greek. This video is of Racist Toronto Liberal MP Jim Karagiannis, who leads the charge at the Macedonia is greek protests. You are confused. The ministry of Northern Greece was renamed into Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace in 1988. The administrative region in Greece had been always called Macedonia since 1913. See also Society of Macedonian studies founded in Thessaloniki in 1939. Propaganda in both countries is often based in myths

You can be Macedonski, Macedonijan (untranslated) or even plain Ninjas if you like. But you'll never be able to be a Makedonas, as those who named that part of the world as Makedonia were. Inevitably you can't be a Greek if you are a Slav (nothing wrong with being one, as a race they have contributed many marvelous things - just think of Nikola Tesla for example - and many respectable nations and formations throughout their history).

Long Live Macedonia!
2009-01-16 18:39:51
Who cares what the corrupt and racist EU has to say ragarding Macedonia. We don't need the EU and will never be a part of it so long as Greece holds a veto. At least we will wait for the EU's own inevitable implosion. Macedonia will never change it's name or give up it's identity to satisfy the racist ultra nationalist Albanian, Vlach, Turkish Christian imposters to the south who claim 98% ethnic purity from ancient times. What a joke. It's becoming more and more evident that to solve the ethnic problems in the balkans and to ensure stability after the wars come would be to break Greece up into it's bare components as was done to Serbia. What a Hell we live in...

Macedonian is .....
2009-01-16 22:55:15
...whoever is proud of it. That is whoever is proud of that campaign that Macedonians did to spread Greek Language and Civilization to the World, right? Thus Slavs of FYROM must macedonize themselves or seek for a non-macedonian name. There is nothing Macedonian on them this far.
