Recommendations: This week in Belgrade
| 23 October 2009 | By David GalicThe International Book Fair is something that Belgrade prides itself on very much and looks to improve every year. Thousands of enthusiasts descend on the fair every year to see what’s new and exciting in the world of books.
Of course, all genres are covered, from science fiction to sports, cookbooks to dictionaries. The Belgrade Book Fair lasts a full week and always features tons of new releases having their Serbian premiere at the fair.
Every year, one nation is made a special guest and this year that country will be Greece - though publishers from every imaginable country will be present, as always.
There is always a lot more than books though - don’t be surprised to see stands selling music and many other products that do not necessarily fit into the strict definition.
The fair is open all week from 10am to 8pm. Monday, October 26, Belgrade Fair, Bulevar Vojvode Misica 14
Exhibition: Andrea Mantegna
The exhibition showcases the brilliant restoration of the Ovetari Chapel frescoes that were almost completely destroyed in 1944. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the famous grandiose fresco of the Martyrom of Saint Jacob, which was restored shortly after the World War II bombing. Friday, October 23, Italian Palace, Kneza Milosa 56
Global Battle of the Bands National Finale
This international competition takes the winner of the Balkan leg to London to compete for $100,000 and a world tour. Last year’s Serbian leg of the competition was won by pop-punk heroes Tea Break and this year’s competition once again features some of the best rock bands Serbia has to offer. Saturday, October 24, Dom Omladine, Decanska 22
Trio Darina
This Bulgarian trio was formed in 2007 to perform the music of romance. The repertoire focuses on well-known tango numbers and similar steamy genres of dance music. Group leader Darina Vasileva also put together most of the arrangements. Tuesday, October 27, Student Cultural Centre, Kralja MIlana 48
Josipa Lisac
Lisac is a big star in her native Croatia and is perhaps the most original and fresh-sounding pop singer from the former Yugoslavia. She will be promoting her new album in Belgrade for the first time. Expect strange avant-garde clothes and hairstyles to accompany her equally original music. Wednesday, October 28, Sava Centar, Milentija Popovica 9

The issue of national identity is taken seriously by Balkan people – including the least serious among them.
