Serbian Publisher to Print Sequel to “The Jewel of Medina”

A Serbian publisher, the first in the world to publish a controversial novel based on the Prophet Mohammed’s life, has plans to publish the sequel.

“The Jewel of Medina”, the debut novel of American journalist Sherry Jones, hit bookstores in Serbia last August, a week before Random House cancelled its US launch. As in other countries, the Muslim community in Serbia also requested the book’s ban, saying they were offended by the novel, especially the details describing the intimacy between Mohammed and his young wife A’isha.
The BeoBook publishing house withdrew the book from the stores, saying it had no intention to insult anyone, but released it again a month later, when publishers in other countries announced they were going ahead with distribution plans.
Jones’s follow-up, “A’isha and A’lli”, will follow A’isha’s life after the prophet’s death.
“I think the manuscript will be ready in few weeks and we’ll immediately contact the author to buy the rights and prepare a translation,” publisher  Aleksandar Jasic told Belgrade Insight. “We plan to have it ready for the Belgrade Book fair in October.”
Jasic opened his publishing house two years ago with what he describes as an ambition to publish quality literature by foreign authors but also books that might provoke special interest or get people to consider controversial topics.
He bought the rights to the manuscript of “The Jewel of Medina” before the book’s global launch, explaining he saw its bestseller potential as the first fictional account of Mohammad’s private life.
The book still tops Serbian bestseller lists.

Well, I have only read excerpts of it, but from these I concur with the critic inthe New York Ties Book review who dismissed it as a poor piece of work. And yes, believing Muslims would be insulted by it. So I wonder why it is such a success in Serbia: because Muslims might feel insulted by it? Because the people there have a poor taste? Because it repeats to them all negative stereotypes about Islam and Muslims (then Sherry Jones should hide her face in shame, for if it was her purpose to show Islam, or the Prophet [p.b.u.h.] in a positive light, then she has failed miserably.) and just to show you that Muslims are not (save a small mionority that is probably not larger than in other religious communities) fanatics and murderers. I will just ignore her and her, ah, books. Well, let's not give up hope. Maybe the next one will be a little better. And over time the Serbs will see the Muslims as fellow human beings too. I mean, who would want to continue forever a solitary existence, confined only to his own country?

It is extremely sad that Sherry Jones still does not see the point. Her debut novel did not get raving reviews and it did offense a lot of Muslms across the globe. Is it just about money? It is my plea to Ms. Jones to stop this madness. Shahina

This is outrageous. What happened to the respect that once existed for these religious figures? Don't tarnish their history for some cheap thrills, these characters in question led very respectable lives, so why are encouraging the world to doubt them? Mark my words, nothing good will come of this.

Clearly authors of the world have run out of material and have chosen to insult those of faith. Religions are being bashed and the holy founders of these faiths are being degraded. All in the name of art? Or is it greed and hope that such controversial material will peak weak minds to not only read but purchase this trash and give the author what they were really after- fame and fortune. But at what price? To insult as many people possible? To create chaos from the few who take such offenses to an extreme? What knowledge has this author really provided other than her own interpretation of her erroneous facts? Clearly the woman has issues and is in need of therapy but sadly chose to write an offensive book instead. Until due respect is given to all people of all faiths and beliefs harmony will never exist. We have enough trials as it is in this life, is another book to create controversy really necessary?
