"Confessions of an Ecological Assassin"

A couple of years ago, I read a startling book, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, by John Perkins.

In this autobiographical account, Perkins reveals the world of “economic hitmen”, private development consultants paid by the US state to advise the leaders of developing nations on their strategies for infrastructure and exploitation of natural resources in a way that ultimately benefits American owned multinational corporations.

Perkins, a former “hitman” himself, describes his active participation in the takeover of the Panama Canal, the invasion of Grenada, the building of the Saudi Royal Kingdom, the Iran-Contra arms scandal, and the consequences of a failed attempt at coercing Saddam Hussein into an economic partnership with US corporations.

The picture he paints of the links between US foreign policy, multinational corporations and the long arm of the CIA and US Military in an orchestrated effort to expand the American economic empire since the 1960s is so sinister, it makes Balkan conspiracy theories look like children’s bedtime stories.

I am sure glad such a dubious underworld of behind the scenes operators is only make believe.

Perkins must have forgotten to label his book “fiction”. For my part, I personally burned the sacrilegious book after reading what filth and lies it disseminated.

The America that I know and love is the one that genuinely helps poorer nations develop themselves in a sustainable way, advising them soundly on how to best manage their own natural resources and build their economies with regard to local ownership and protection of the environment. That was certainly the case under the globally sensitive leadership of former President George W. Bush, and I believe that President Barack Obama is dedicated to such principles as well.

I was therefore ecstatic to find that the Americans had taken such a keen interest in supporting the development of Kosova’s energy strategy.

USAID’s 20 million dollar contract with private consulting firms to advise the Kosova government on how to develop its energy sector was the perfect way of ensuring that the USA’s dedication to sustainable development and battling climate change with a new green energy future would be embraced by Kosova’s leadership.
I am absolutely sure that American dollars are indeed being spent for Kosova’s ultimate benefit.

And as American President Obama works with the US Congress to pass unprecedented climate change legislation that will revolutionise the United States a lead it to a “green” energy future, Kosova’s Prime Minister Hashim Thaci is working with his key ministers and advisors to unveil the offer to private investors for Kosova Re thermoelectric power plant. I am thankful that Kosova has such a positive role model for sustainable development and environmental responsibility, to look up to in times of momentous decisions such as this.

That meddling conspiracy theorist Perkins should come to Kosova and see how American foreign policy is really done.

Please read a bit about the 1973 coup that brought down Allende in Chile or all the other coups in Latin America in the 1970s. If you have a strong stomach yopu might even try the 1965 oup in Indonesia were at least 500,000 people were killed. All with US involvement. Whether you believe Perkins or not, the US certainly has done some bad things in its foreign policy. And US business was sometimes involved (see for example ITT and Chile). This is not to say that Americans are worse people than Albanians, Serbs or whoever. It is simply an illustration of the old saying: power corrupts.

As a Kosovar I respect you, but I have to disagree with your opinion.

KSV's "brilliant brownish-green" energy strategy...

MISTER MAN, DONT SOUND AS IF YOU ARE IGNORANT AND HAVE BEEN BLINDFOLDED BY USA "HELP". This American led UN policies are aimed for selfish reasons. CANT YOU WONDER WHY ALL THESE "DEVELOPED NATIONS" ARE RISING AT A SPEEDY RATE AND THE "THIRD WORLD NATION" ARE NOT DEVELOPING DESPITE ABUNDANT HUMAN AND NATURAL RESOURCES AT THEIR DISPOSAL??? LOOK AT NATURAL RESOURCES IN AFRICA AND MIDDLE EAST, TAKE A LOOK AT THE VAST HUMAN RESOURCES IN ASIA AND EASTER/SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE... TAKE A SECOND THOUGHT MISTER BEFORE JUMPING ON CONCLUSION. AS FOR ME, I HAVE ALREADY KNOWN ALL THESE THAT US AND ITS ALLIES ARE MILKING THE REST OF THE WORLD WITH THEIR AGENTS CALLING THEMSELVES "HUMANITARIAN AGENCIES, NGOs, MULTINATIONAL ORGANISATIONS ETC", TO ACHIEVE THEIR SELFISH AMBITIONS.TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL, THEY ENSURE THEY PLANT A SEED OF HATRED BETWEEN ETHNIC GROUPS OF NATIONS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. WHICH THEY ARE SUCEEDING, EXCEPT YOU AND I WILL STAND UP AND SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, WE WANT TRUE JUSTICE". UNTIL THEN, THE WORLD WILL NEVER KNOW PEACE!!! I REST MY CASE

Mr Johnson, you are being either very naive or sarcastic, and I do hope it's the latter

um. it's called sarcasm.

I'm really worried about how little public discussion there seems to be about these new plants. The American option of two new lignite-based plants sounds ecologically horrifying.
