The EU and NATO - the New Religion

Tirana | 07 April 2009 | By Besar Likmeta

Looking at the celebrations marking Albania’s NATO accession over the weekend one could not help but feel a sense of déjà vu, recalling the military parades of Albania’s former Stalinist regime.

True, cardboard missiles targeted at NATO have been replaced by modern plasma screens and graphics beamed into the collective consciousness.

But they embody the same old propaganda principles. The message is: we love NATO, and we adore it as much as we once adored the Warsaw Pact, the USSR, China and whatever alliance we were engaged with before.

That sense of fetishism, of wanting to stand on the right side, with the powerful and the almighty, has an almost religious quality.

Albania first applied for entry into the Atlantic alliance back in 1992, being the first country in the former communist bloc to seek the new military partnership with the West.

Although we did make it in the club after nearly two decades and Albanian politicians proudly declare that 95 per cent of the population supports this accession, one can’t help but wonder why everything produced in the West tends to be consumed in our little corner of the world without question.

Like a mirage of the Garden of Eden, entry into the EU now gleams in the distance. Every politician in this country, and its neighbours, likes to portray himself like Moses, taking us to the Promised Land - the Western club, where the grass is always green.

Albanian PM Berisha duing NATO celebrations in Tirana

The journey started with the nationalistic state and the breakaway from the Ottoman Empire, which, like the Pharaohs of Egypt, had kept us, according to the politicos, from fulfilling our destiny.

In the 20th century, communism took over and they all tried to lead us into proletarian heaven - yet another creation of the West.

Now they all want to lead us into NATO and the EU.  For the last two decades everything in this country has been measured in accordance with NATO or EU standards. People had to reach EU standards, as did laws, toilets, schools, politicians, protest and God knows what else.

Now we did make it into NATO, having been weighed, measured and found worthy, it’s time that we questioned these standards. By that, I don’t mean that they are necessarily bad or good. But if history teaches anything, it is that it’s doomed to be repeated. We have consumed ready-made ideologies produced in the past by the West, like nationalism and communism, with problematic results.

Let’s think for a moment, Albania made it into NATO, but Macedonia didn’t. Was it because our military or democratic standards are higher? Bulgaria and Romania are part of the EU club and they are certainly not the beacons of good governance.

What I am trying to say is that we should have our own standards in terms of democracy and good governance, instead of being told by someone in Brussels what they are, or how we can fulfill them.

As the flock wanders in the desert we are deluged with photo-opportunities with Western leaders. They try to tell us that these God-like figures of good power support one or other politician. And if these almighties themselves approve of our leaders, who are we to question such thing?

Our politicians all subscribe to the EU-NATO religion, leaving us only to wonder who is the prophet to lead us through the endless desert of transition.

All we have left, unfortunately, is the hope that journey will be worth it. However, despite our blind faith in the West, we should be able to question it. In the end, if what the West propagates is true, it will only make such faith stronger.

The present and our future.

Dear Besar Likmeta! I am writing in reponse to your article about Albania in Nato. Some of the facts you wrote are true, but the way you consider the facts are based in your own point of view and are truly ironic. We love the fact that Albania is a full member of Nato, and we dream of progress as whole country based in trust we have for our allies. The past unfortunately has been unjust for Albania as we all know, but the present is the reality. We love to be strong and proud country beside our allies, and we look forward to our future thru education and civilization. Thank you.

Dear Besar, You make some good points, but really, since when is Communism a Western invention? If you're aiming at Marx' and Engels' theories, that's a totally different thing. The Communism you refer to has virtually nothing to do with their thoughts and ideas. It definitely didn't come from the West (whatever that may be). Brings me to my second point: whoever it comes from, sadly small countries like Albania will always be subjected to foreign influences. It just depends on which leaders you condone off in charge of your country how these influences will take effect in everyday life. Just don't allow anothe Hoxha to rule your country and you'll be fine. But I'm sorry to bust the bubble Ari: Albania is not a strong country next to its allies. It's just another country patching up the holes in the North Atlantic alliances. Doesn't mean it's not a proud country though.

Bravo Besar

Well done Besar. It was about time people start looking into this! Throughout history the Albanians have made the same mistakes, ally with the falling powers. E.g. Ali Pash Tepelena, went into an Alliance with Napoleon at a time when the fall of the ottoman Empire was not neaer. It was only after the defeat of the Rusians that the Albanians should have revolted, and been ready for war. Not such things am afraid, and acording to noel Malcom, even at that time the Albanian consciousness and awareness was very poor. Joining the Eastern Alliance was a mistake, which only people with a weak consciousness, could have fallen for, A- Violence (and the reverence that albanians have for it)owards the Yugosdlav backed Enver Hoxha, and B- The Golden spoon promise! Albania went into a club where our race had disadvantages due to the large slav population of the East European Block and concetration of Power in a Serbian ally, without considering it thouroughly, and also without taking into consideration the opinion of most of its people. An opinion that was disregarded and not even with an understanding of it. The history of Albania is full of imported ideas that Albanians have not taken seriously as a result of all the uneccesary influx of them. i remind you the promises of Rome, for swiching into Catholicism, and then the tax benefits and open doors to the Ottoman Empire. Today most news about NATO come with a disregard and ridicule especially by the English press about the utility of such an Alliance. Regardless the role that NATO played in our history is without a doubt positive and crystal clear. This is once again not good enough a reason to just stop thinking once again and leave it allinto this mass produced version of imported democracy, putting it on like that typical indigenous peasant put a western hat looking ridiculous in it. We know very well what is good and bad in terms of our standards. A few months ago a minister, Ylli Pango got caught asking for sex bribes. We know this is wrong and we did not allow any paper laws to get in the way. A minister! In England where I live from 12 years, I have been asked for sex bribes from every manager, from every lecturer and never was I allowed to actually prove it, never was my complaint taken seriously, a nd not even my insights and warning about the dangers that the decline of values will lead to, including economic downturn. Their excuse is the future of sexuality, bisexual orgism, an excuse for sexual harasment. After having studied Busines in on of the greatest London Unitersities, the job portals would have been open if a society was clean as their picture is. A picture they keep clean by means of brainwashing tactics where you will not be allowed to talk about sex groups unless you are willing to go into one, which is often ruled by its lords! Those lords are the ones who preach racial equality on one sides while on the other encouragin the black population to be extremely racist against people like you and me. I live in Spain now, and am looking for a simple job, rather then a graduate one, where I know that I wont be dismissed after thre months because I failed to show and adopt the English favoured sexuality in and for their own convencience! This is once again a time in which the Albanians are not looking where they are going or what they are doing. Th British Economy is the fasted weakening economy in the West going down with 3.9 % acrodign to the IMF and 3% acording to the ministry of economy. Promoting people in higher position on sex availability grounds is obvioulsly not doing it for the nation, while it does it for the actual managers. Once again you will not know where you are sending your kinds, besides the beautifull vision of a rich nation. A whoe corrupt system of values await your kids in this future. We surely should be aiming to be part of NATO annd the EU, but our debate has no clues as to the realities of the Albanians in the West or in the EU, who rapresent more then a third of our population. A people that has an excellent understanding the good western values and can contribute to the elevation of the nations political debate, bring it up to date with all events. What I spoke earlier wil not bring the collapse of the Western Society, or even if it does it will not come to happen to soon, but will defenitely weaken it. We as Albanians, have to be aware and responsive. One would have thought that after attempts to exterminate our people, in which time not every Albanian partecipated in the defence of the affected areas and peoples, this should not repeat itself over and over again. We should be able to say, “lesson learned” at some point. PS: Speaking with my parents, who are intelectuals, I was surprised at their inability to answer this question, “How comes it was exactly Ylli Pango? Why did this phenomena apear in the tourist industry?”! If you can not think it neither, let me tell you. All those tourists are bring with them other negative Western Ideas, as were Communism from Germany and France, the Mafia from Italy, and sex bribes from the rest of those areas (England especially). Its only our fault if we allow them any grounds in our culture! We shall have only ourselfs to blame! Nese deshiron me teper informacion mund te me kontaktosh!

Communism and the Future!
2009-04-08 16:08:14
Dear Billy I am afraid I have to contradict your first point that communism was indeed a Western Invention. The Comune of Paris practices it for a few months as well, besides having its inventors from EU countries. All the excuses that this was implemented differently are prety much like the wahbie version of the muslims whoa re allways seeking the purst and most original version, getting no where. by the way the Albanian communism was the closest to that of the books that obviously failed us. The second point i wanted to mention in favour of Besar is that Albania is indeed a small country and open to influence of the big nations (no wonder we speak all their languages like the Dutch), but we also have a tendency of taking the worst from them. look at our experience with opening to Italy. Romano prody refered to this fact in one of his speaches that "It was the Italian mafia that reached Albania before the real Italy"! We have seeen this before and we will see it again! I am glad about membership in the NATO and application to the EU. But all this is more imported ideology which just wont look as good on us as would a self tailored democracy! Sure learn from the best, but make sure you dont learn the worst from them!

Democracy itself is a Western idea, conceived by your despised neighbour to the south. Is it possible that it may prove as detrimental to Albania as the "Western ideologies" which preceded it?

Oooooray!
2009-04-08 23:08:26
Albania is a burden for NATO!!!What are they bringing in NATO? Nothing...and if NATO was a defensive organization now is an aggressor! Who they want to fight? USSR is gone,Russia is thinking only about defense,China and India -about integrity... who is next?NATO is a true demonized organization!

Good article, Besar

Very well written, insightful and with 'both feet on the ground'. There is a reason why nations of the West are increasingly disillusioned about the NATO. Bulk of NATO's combatant forces is comprised of American and British soldiers, which puts considerable strain on both countries in terms of public opinion, with other members limiting their contributions to 'non-combatant' roles. NATO is looking for a member state ready to contribute more of 'combatant' forces to be deployed in Iraq and Afganistan, and the most recent members would be the most likely source. The price paid for the membership could turn out to be too high, and it is wise to think about it beforehand. Maybe that is the reason Croatians were quite sombre about their membership...

Democracy and NATO!

Democracy and NATO! To Makednos We as Albanians, like Democracy but we do not like it how the Invetors of democracy have a little clue about it. They still have to account for genocide in the 20s and late 40s, as well as give properties back to the people they ethnicly cleansed! Besides they need to learn to live democratically and without racism! To Serge Albania is bring people to countries no one from NATO wants to send anyone! Other things would include diversity, a strategic position in the ballkans and geopolitics! You se, those guys know their stuff! And no one give you something fior nothing! Will power is more then enough at other times! You sad it yourself that China is a power, but China is full of Tibets and Xyrkistans and Iner Mongolias and Manchurias and MAndarins in it! They can very well claim independence soon! and rightly so! They will learn from, hahahah, you know! As for Rusia, it will never be gone, just last year it invanded Georgia! or did you conventiently forget! How about their issues with gass, and all the gas they want to sell to the EU nations, and then close the vault in order to get some political advantages. They are not safe and safety those days comes easier in numbers, especially so since the world recesion is mking the world a less safer place and more tense!

Tim Burton’s latest film, Alice in Wonderland, is easily his most visually stunning yet, showing just how vividly the magic can be put on the big screen. Burton has lined a top-notch cast in front of a green wall allowing him to let his imagination fly, but limiting the actors’ opportunity to give vent to their expressions.
