Zagreb Sees Continued Protests

Some 500 protesters, demanding that the government resign, gathered in Zagreb on Monday evening for the third protest in less than a week.

The anti-government protesters headed towards the central Ban Josip Jelacic square and marched further towards St. Mark's Square, the seat of the government and parliament.

Shouting "Resignation, Resignation!" and "Jadranka, Leave!", the protesters were stopped by the police in Radiceva Street, as protests in St. Mark's square are banned.

Monday's protest followed violent clashes between police and anti-government protesters on Saturday, in which dozens of people were injured and arrested. The demonstrators, who have organised their rallies via Facebook, blame the government for the country's poor economic situation and widespread corruption.

Ivan Pernar, the organiser of last week's anti-government protests, reiterated the protesters' request that Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko be replaced.

After they were prevented from going to St. Mark's Square, the protesters, whose number grew to 1,000, headed towards the offices of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ. The building where the HDZ offices are located is under a heavy police protection.

They later rallied outside the National University Library, where Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor was attending a ceremony at which awards were to be presented to successful enterprises.
