The Cantonal Court in Tuzla sentenced three former members of the Bosnian army to a total of five years in prison for a crime against a Bosnian Serb civilian in Srebrenik, central Bosnia.
Nedzad Oric has been sentenced to three years of prison while Hamed Salihovic and Azem Ahmic were given one year in prison each. They were found guilty of having violated provisions of international law during the war by attacking a civilian, Stevo Tesic, who was incapable of defending himself.
According to the first instance verdict, the attack happened on July 17, 1995, when Oric, Salihovic and Ahmic stopped a bus in front of Tesic's house in the village of Jasenica, near Srebrenik.
When Tesic refused to let some Bosniak refugees from Srebrenica move into his house, Oric, Salihovic and Ahmic attacked him, causing severe bodily injuries, including multiple fractures and contusions.
Afterwards they drove Tesic, who was unconscious, to military barracks in the village of Ciljuge, about thirty kilometres from his house, and left him lying there.
According to the verdict, later that night an unidentified person, who was stationed at the Ciljuge military barracks killed Tesic by cutting his throat.
The parties have the right to file an appeal with the Supreme Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
