Macedonia’s main airport, Alexander the Great in the capital Skopje, was closed for arrivals on Monday morning due to thick fog, with flights into the city cancelled or diverted.
The airport authorities told Balkan Insight that so far today the runway has only been used for departures, but they expect a return to normal operations in the afternoon.
They say that several aircraft took off during the morning hours.
On Saturday the airport management closed the facility for arrivals and for departures. Scheduled flights to Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Zagreb, Podgorica and Bursa were cancelled.
Monday arrivals from Vienna, Istanbul, Zagreb, Ljubljana have all been diverted to Macedonia’s second commercial airport in Ohrid. Some of the departures scheduled for Monday have also been diverted to Ohrid.
The Macedonian Weather Service forecasts fog in the valleys and a stable and dry weather pattern throughout Monday and Tuesday.
