Suspect in Murder of Macedonian Arrested

An official from the police station in Presevo, in South Serbia, named Zoran Memarovic, was arrested on suspicion that he killed Macedonian national Mahir Jakupi.

Police in Vranje announced that they suspected that that the murder was carried out by an individual wearing a police uniform who was then seen fleeing the crime scene.

On March 3, traffic police patrolmen found Jakupi's body, with neck wounds, in a Ford Escort car with Macedonian registration plates. The car was on a section of the Corridor 10 highway about 400 kilometres south of Belgrade and a few kilometres from the Cukarka border crossing between Serbia and Macedonia.

"According to initial findings of the investigation, Jakupi was killed, most likely shot, early in the morning on March 3," said Stanisa Mihajlovic, the investigating judge from Vranje working on the case.

He added that the victim was from Gostivar, a town in western Macedonia.
