Srebrenica Survivors to Sue Dutch Soldiers

Srebrenica genocide survivors will file criminal charges against Dutch UN peacekeepers, who failed to protect civilians of UN's "safe area" in July 1995.

At least five members of several associations of Srebrenica survivors will announce on Saturday they will file charges against the Dutch batallion officers, who served in Srebrenica during the Bosnian war 1992-95.

A BIRN investigation on Friday revealed a testimony of a Bosniak woman, whose child Dutch soldiers buried together with at least five or more adults in a grave inside the Dutch UN compound in Potocari.

Over 8.000 muslim men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb Army led by general Ratko Mladic, during Srebrenica massacre in July 1995, which was ruled as genocide by both ICTY and International Court of Justice, ICJ, in The Hague.

"We want the whole truth about the massacre to be finally revealed", Mesud Mustafic, chairmen of "Drina Wave" association of Srebrenica survivors told Balkan Insight.

"International and domestic courts ruled that the army of Bosnian Serbs did the killings, but we hold the Dutch responsible, not only for doing nothing to prevent the mass scale murders, but also for participation in the execution of genocide", Mustafic added.

The Dutch court in The Hague has already ordered the Netherlands to compensate relatives of three victims of the 1995 massacre in the town, as it found the Dutch responsible for the death of the men who were killed in the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre.

Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb leader held responsible for the massacre, is currently on trial for genocide and other grave crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia, ICTY, in The Hague.
