Seven people, including three officials from the Transport Authority in the city of Fier, were arrested on Monday, accused of issuing driving licences for kickbacks.
“The suspects are accused of issuing driving licenses in an abusive manner for bribes,” the Fier Prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The arrested include the head of the local commission for issuing drivers’ licenses and two of its members.
A local businessman, two driving schools owners and an instructor were also arrested, accused of acting as middlemen for the payment of the bribes.
Meanwhile, the local head of Transpiration Authority in Fier, Luan Baci, has been suspended and placed under investigation for abuse of power.
The suspect are believed to have issued more than 50 drivers’ licenses to people who had not passed the written or road test in return for bribes arranged by the driving school owners.
Prosecutors said that the probe was ongoing and more people could be indicted soon.
