Serbia's Ruling Party to Ponder Spring Election

The pro-government newspaper Informer has reported that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party will hold a meeting next week to discuss early parliamentary elections in the spring.

The presidency of the Serbian Progressive Party will meet on January 10 to discuss whether to go for early parliamentary elections this spring, the pro-government tabloid Informer said on Friday.

National elections would potentially be held alongside the local elections in the capital, Belgrade, which is where otherwise weak opposition parties have the strongest core of voters.

This is not the first time that the Progressives have mulled holding fresh elections, despite their having a healthy majority in Serbia's parliament.

Last November, the party leadership also discussed the issue, but decided against general elections – apparently following the advice of the party’s leader, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

As BIRN reported, some experts believe the Progressives are worried about losing the local elections in Belgrade, which would deal a serious blow to their image and potentially boost the opposition.

They say the party may want to link the Belgrade elections to national elections in order to better harness Vucic’s personal popularity to the former.

Other Progressive candidates are seen as likely to struggle in this stronghold of the opposition.

Talk about it!
