Serbian Army Law Changes ‘Boost Minister’s Power’

Experts expressed concern about the Defence Ministry’s planned amendments to legislation governing the armed forces, which could give the minister more power over recruitment to the Serbian Army and weapons purchases.

After the Defence Ministry announced that it has prepared amendments to the Law on the Serbian Army, experts warned that they would give more power to the minister, opening up the potential for misuse.

Experts told BIRN that the proposed changes, if adopted, would give the minister power to decide on the recruitment of staff, but also on all public procurements of weapons.

They said the changes would also enable the minister to declare any information secret, while the military police would be given some civil powers, which they currently do not have.
