Serbia Marks 10th Anniversary of October 5 Revolution

It has been ten years since Serbians overthrew strongman Slobodan Milosevic, marching into the decade full of hope and great expectations for the future.

While October 5, 2000 is celebrated as a historic moment of democratic change, the energy and optimism that marked the overthrow of Milosevic ten years ago seems to have faded.

Analysts blame the mood in the country on a combination of factors, including poor living standards and the government's apparent lack of direction as to the country’s next steps.

Most agree that Serbia is headed down the road towards membership in the European Union, but believe the process will continue to be a slow one, further adding to the gloomy mood.

One of the largest events being held to mark today's anniversary is a gathering in Belgrade dedicated to a discussion of Serbia's European future and regional cooperation in Southeast Europe- "Serbia on the road to Europe - 10 years after".

Participants will discuss the achievements and challenges of the past ten years and Serbia's future, including the country's EU perspective.

The conference will welcome Serbian President Boris Tadic, who will deliver an opening speech, and a number of top officials from Serbia and abroad will be in attendance.

The event is organised by the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, the government's office for EU integration and The Balkan Trust for Democracy.

Talk about it!
